I think you can put the board with the reel #2 error in your machine, it will of course tilt, however, you should be able to get into the test mode and run the 50 test and see if you get your audio.

Hope this helps

the only board that uses the dip switches is the 16 meg board (no volume pot is attached to this board)

I have some S+ boards that work and they are looking for a new home!

Pm me if you are interested.

I recently had sound issue on S+........was working aok, sound died, replaced volume pot, still no sound, then sound randomly came back on while playing, was ok for awhile then died again........started swapping parts with other machines.....ended up being bad motherboard......now I just use this board for testing purposes

The motherboard was bad, or the MPU board?

The motherboard is the fixed circuit board in the bottom of the machine that the removable MPU board plugs into.

The MPU board is the removable circuit board mounted in the silver tray with the black knob that you remove to replace chips on.

I would have started by putting your 16mhz board into the slot with no sound.
This would prove out that there is nothing wrong with the speaker or wiring harnesses.
You could also then put in your 10mhz board into a slot with good working sound and see if it functions......
Assuming sound problems with the board the usual culprit is either the potentiometer (volume wheel) or the sound chip (soldered).  For $20 - $40 you can pick up a S+ 10mhz board on ebay.  I wouldn't even try unsoldering a custom IC - Its a custom chip, just pick up a new board.
If you have a board with sound and a bad reel, the usual problem with the bad reel is one of the 5 resistors in the corner of the board. If you see a burn't one that is probably a bad reel. In North America the slots have 3 reels, In OZ several had 5 reels. You can use resistor 4 or 5 to replace resistor 2 or which ever is fried.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

The volume control should read about 10,000 Ohms from end to end.

It could be the sound chip is bad, AY3-xxxx, try swapping it with the one on your good board.

It could be the amplifier chip is bad, LM388, if you don't have a scope you may have to replace that chip to see if it is the problem.

Cut the legs at the body of the chip then remove the pins and clean the holes for the replacement chip.

Trying to remove the solder from the heatsink (PC board) area is a real pain if you try with the chip still soldered in.

Worst case call Larry 702-363-9998 and arrange to have the board sent in for repair.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.
