889 lighting issue and odd key
« on: March 18, 2021, 06:44:48 AM »
Picked up this 889, mostly working well steps up and pays properly.

The second coin light on the door does not come on.  I’ve tried new bulbs, tested the socket by jumping.  Socket functions.  How do I figure out where the wiring issue would be?

Also, this machine had an odd key hanging inside.  Any thoughts on what is is used for?

Thanks.

Since the top 2nd coin light works.
I would suspect an open wire for the light behind the reel glass.

Could be near the hinge area or the molex white plug connection.
Also the pins inside the molex loose contact, over heated burn marks may indicate a problem.
Check all black tape connections that don’t look original.
If everything looks okay.
Then follow the color coded wire back into the machine checking for continuity along the way.

Curious as to what the key was for, possibly for access to the bottom box / coin box.

the only things in the 2nd coin light on the reel glass is a line unit wiper->rivet connection and the plug connections between the line unit and coin door.

clean the rivet labelled 85-4 on the below diagram and make sure the wiper fingers are making good contact to it when the unit is stepped up one or two times.  You can also stick a voltmeter on black/white wire 85-4 and blue wire 20 on the lamp sockets to see if you have 6VAC when the line unit is stepped up once or twice.

if that's ok, then wire 85-4 goes all the way to the 2nd coin lamp socket, so follow it thru the plugs and check with a voltmeter there and/or visually inspect the plug connections.  There's only one black/white wire on the insert plug and door plug, so it's easy to tell which one it is without looking at the plug charts on the schematic.

Thanks for the help David and Wolf.    Traced it to the beau plug.  Guess it was a dirty contact.

Got the machine cleaned up, and working except the coin accepted and insert coin lights.

Not really showing any power going to beau plug for these lights.

When I swapped the reel mech with my other 889, the lights work properly.

Where should I look next?  These switches?

Jump from a color coded wire on a working light to the problem light color coded wire lug.
If the lights work, this will eliminate the common blue wire as faulty.

Then check the coin relay switches as to be functioning properly.
They might just need to be cleaned.

I believe in some cases the switches on the far right control the lights in question.
