Problem solved !!!!!!
This printer has a sensor that indicates whether the drawer is closed. When you slide the printer completely out of the base you can see at the rear left corner of the base a protruding plastic tab. It's right next to the screw and clamp that secures the cable for strain relief. When the printer is fully seated all the way in, this tab protrudes through a hole into the printer housing and triggers a sensor. I noticed on my base housing, the whole plastic corner was broken off tab and all. I simply took the plastic tab, inserted it into the hole in the printer housing and glued it in place. Now the machine will always think the drawer is closed.
I then booted up my machine, opened and closed the door and the error cleared. I fed a bill into the machine to load some credits then cashed it out and it printed a ticket. I then fed the ticket into the bill validator and the machine accepted it. The machine even plays a special tune when printing and accepting a ticket.
