S+ 5x Pay Deluxe intermittent coin comparitor issue
« on: December 06, 2018, 01:37:50 PM »
My coin comparitor is set up for nickels.  The unit does not see all of the coins.  It is very intermittent.  May not see 5 in a row, than see's a few, than nothing again.

Any ideas?

Was this issue always that way since you owned it?
If so remove the comparator and look down thru the black plastic piece that was directly under the comparator.
Is the space there big enough to fit a dollar coin in it?
If it is then the coin may miss the optic sensor on some of the time when you drop the coin in

No, it used to be pretty good at seeing coins, but terrible at rejecting anything, so I replaced the comparitor thinking it was not good.  You could drop just about anything that would fit through it and it would credit.

Has been a $0.05 machine since I have owned it.

EDIT:  I should also add that since I did replace the unit, the machine had a low battery issue and I replaced it on the board.  During this process, I messed something up and ultimately had to replace the game chip.  The game does function fine when it does credit.

Do you have the sensitivity adjustment pot on the replacement comparitor turn down? It's located in the lower right front corner of the comparitor.. Turn it all the way counter clockwise..

There are a number of possibilities (and or combination):
1. A 25c machine with a 25c head has been converted into a different denomination - You drop a penny or dime and it might not go down the center. thus not recognized --- FIX change the coin head.
2. Coins get stuck - usually this happens if you try and put nickles through the Optics which have been setup for quarters - Add spacers
3. Coins not registered - Possibly the sample coin needs to be replaced.
4. Coins not registered - the ABC optic board is dirty - Remove, open, clean with a non-alcohol based mild-cleaner. Wet wipes are about perfect, windex -don't. Qtip slightly damp is good.
5. Any coin works - adjust the coin comparator sensitivity
6. Any coin works - Optics have been damaged or previously mod-ed to work with a Imonex (non electronic coin acceptor)
7. Coins go to hopper and are not registered or rejected - The rake solenoid is bad or has been tied back (often because it is bad or disconnected )

Given your description I am guessing 4 & 7.

If you have the PSR for your game chip there are self tests to determine if your ABC optic is working etc.

Hope this helps.

Let me clarify a little.  It's not that the coins are making it in the hopper unregistered.  Most times they pass straight through into the coin tray.  If it registers, they go in the hopper.  So that tells me the solenoid is good.

I could not find the old one to test.

Cleaned the optics. Was originally a $0.50 machine, changed to nickles.  Head looks correct.
That being said, I think it's a bad comparitor.
Tried to adjust the sensitivity and the pot just crumbled.
Do you have any?  Could use some small button bulbs and a reel led unit for the attached machine too.  One line on one is not working.

That comparitor does not look correct. I think that’s a CC-33, used for large coins like 50c and $1.00.. You need a CC-16 with the Grey coil wires as pictured. I’m thinking this is your main problem. Also what is the spring that’s wedged behind the top of the black plastic box for the circuit board?

that is the wrong coin comp. for your machine, it is for a dollar.  your picture of the optics  is from a S+ machine. the only way to determine what coin in encoder(black piece) you have is to remove the two screws holding the optics together, look at the encoder, it is written on it what coin it is used for.  can;t see the picture of the coin head, you would like to put the right size head on it, reason, if you let it set up on nickels , and the opening is a 50 coin head, then any coin smaller than a 50 cent piece can be inserted into the coin opening, it won't go anywhere because the cc-16 will only accept anything smaller than a nickel.  I have the proper coin in head, the right encoder, the right CC-16,  also have the small bulbs for you 4 reel machine,    also have  new play 180 inserts.  will have to check on the small reel leds.

let me know.

Not sure what the spring is for.  I didn't add it.  I would assume it's to hold the coin holder over.  Thanks for the info.

Yes, please send me a PM with what you want for all of the mentioned items and I can send a paypal payment over.

Thanks for the help all!

Side note:  It looks like this was moved to the S2000 boards.  Why is that?  Thought is was an S+ machine.

That is a S+ machine, but the other one pictured a few replays back was of a S2000. So I’m guessing someone moved this thread because of that picture.

You're correct.  That is a different machine than the one this thread was asking about.  I'll delete that picture.
