S2000 experiments.
« on: February 29, 2020, 11:03:56 AM »
Some attention has been brought to one of my experiments on an igt s2000. Seeing as i have a good few machines i can play with is there other things people are curious about but have been too afraid of bricking there machines? Any any has anything interesting enough i will throw together a test machine and se can test stuff.

Examples im looking for are stuff like what happens if you pull the cabinet io board while its running( it blows a buffer chip on the mpu), what does a slot cheating device do to it.

I don’t mind killing parts. hell if we kill parts we can learn how they fail and how we can fix them.

I'm glad you're willing to take this on.I've done it for the S+ platform and blown many parts....lol
But like you said, we don't learn what breaks unless we try to do it on purpose and in a controlled way.

I've removed software chips and swapped them left and right  to see what error codes would pop up for example.
With thermal paper labels on top, you can see the heat coming thru the chips.
Luckily I had spare stuff to get them back up and running on my S+ Frankenstein tester without too much of a problem.

I used to own a slot shop that specialized in igt repairs i still have all the inventory from that. I also have a hot air rework station so i can do most the board repairs we should run into. One thing i have been tempted to try is to take solder past mix it into some Heavy flux. Then sand down the area under the varta batterie put a thin layer of the mixture down and hit it with the reflow gun.

Yes....those traces are the thinnest ones that get eaten by acid leaks killing 50X MPU's.I've been able to repair a few with I believe 24ga. wiring but I like your idea better.

I will have to go through my box of bad boards and see if i can find one I haven’t stolen the buffer chip off of yet. I quit fixing battery damage boards.

Thank you so much for your time and your willingness to test stuff on your machines Retro Tech Repair! I am very excited to hear that you got hold of some machines and I’m wondering what would happen if you try to boot the World Wide Web onto an s2000? Or Windows 95? (If that’s even possible lol)

Making an s2 run any kind of modern computer operating system would not be possible with the stock hardware. About the best you will get out of custom code would be minor modifications to pay tablets or bet per line data. A few people have done it, but because of copy protection and counterfeiting issues I don’t believe the process to do so is not allowed to be discussed on this forum. Something you may be interested in trying is to get your hands on a video machine i have converted bally evos and igt igames into Windows computers(to run jukebox software or touch screen games). It’s actually fairly easy.

I had a Bally Evo that had a Microsoft Windows based operating system in it... better explained here by another NLG member:

The EVO HYBRID further elevates the strategic rapid development partnership between Bally Gaming and Systems and Microsoft® that created the original EVO platform. This new platform now utilizes the powerful capabilities of the Microsoft Windows XP® Embedded operating system. As a Microsoft rapid development partner, Bally Gaming has privileged access to the latest in Microsoft's cutting-edge software and hardware advancements. Simply put, this translates to providing casino customers with the most entertaining gaming experience possible by delivering new creative content quickly to the casino floor.

Evos are interesting machines. The suitcase computer uses a standard motherboard form factor too so they are very good for modding and hacking. The lcds in the hybrid models are very useful too i have hacked them into a number of other games.

That is so cool! What have you modded games to do? I can’t imagine all the endless possibilities lol. I also can’t wait for others to suggest other  s2000 experiments. I am now wondering what would happen if you yank out the MPU while a game is running?

I have actually yanked out the mpu and plugged it back in live before. Most of the time it did absolutely nothing just rebooted the machine. I would not recommend it tho the one time it did go wrong it blew up the mpu.

How did you do it wrong? And what did a blown up MPU look like?
