Williams High Speed Slot-No Sound Problem
« on: January 04, 2021, 06:26:21 PM »
Desperate for help!
My Williams 400 High Speed slot has no sound. The machine runs okay otherwise. Speaker checks good, continuity on cable from speaker checks good also. Checksum on XU-17 chip 27C4001 is 04795100. Unable to check the other XU-18, XU-30, & XU31 27C040 chips with my chip programmer.
Any suggestions, or possible source for replacement sound chips would be appreciated.

If you replaced the battery recently and did a clear then the volume is turned off by default, go into the setting and turn it back on.

If what Jim said does not work.
I have the eprom files. My U17 checksum is 0C715100. If you can not read the other chips be sure you have the correct device selected, sometimes a different manufacturer device will read them. I have UV 27C4001 chips and can program a set if it helps. PM if you like.

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply.Checked sound levels, all are on, but still no sound.
It it possible that the sound amp could be the problem?
Also in reply from Tony... My checksum for the XU-17 is different for your's.....any idea why that would be?

The most common error for no sound is the harness that goes from the backplane to the molex connector that the coin tray fits into. Sometimes you need to take a long screwdriver and gently push down to seat the harness. The other common error is where the harness connects to the the bottom of the machine. A lot of times the plastic fasteners that attach it to the machine get broken and when you put the coin tray on, it just pushes it down instead of seating itself. If the harness is not the issue, then I would look into the sound eproms.  Let me know and I can post the checksums.

Checked my files again today on a different computer and the checksum for that U17 matches your checksum. If things change I will let you know.

U17 04795100
U18 045C4900
U30 052B2100
U31 0453CE00

U2  00FE7039
U3  01BED75B

Not sure what I did the other day? Anyway with your machine working except for sound I'm sure you will figure it out.

You can check the jumper on the rear of the logic board that selects between 4meg and 8meg sound ROMs.  It could be set to the incorrect one (yours would be 4 meg).  Has the sound ever worked, or is this something new?
