Invalid Sprite Entry!
« on: January 30, 2021, 09:10:39 PM »
Hey Team,

New player here.

Ive restored a MK6? (xicte?) NZ Players choice machine.
Been reset, new batteries etc etc
This machine also has the top screen which is functioning.

Was running fine, however noticed if left on not playing for say 20 minutes the machine would freeze and need to be restarted.
Fast forward a couple of weeks since its been turned on and now when it gets turned on it will get as far as

Found 2 video chips.
Loading resources...
Process AvlLoad (30)
6d9d6 v_object.c: Invalid spite entry!

and then endless reboot with the same thing coming up before rebooting

Ive tried removing and reinstalling video card and game chips but no improvments.

Any ideas?

(Apologies on the dark photo, its the only one i have of the machine)

Flaky RAM? It's passing the checksum tests so the chips are good at least. What happens if you swap the board with one of the others?

I tired the complete board from the other machine that has its own faults (see my other forum post about that one)

and that booted to game audit screen but couldn't get as far as playing the game presumably because of the button layout differences and was showing the error of belly panel door open (which i have no idea which the belly panel is)

so in a nut shell with a different board it seems to run fine so dont think its a fault of the cabinet

Perhaps should i try switching the game chips to the other board and see if any improvment?

Belly panel is the bottom artwork glass - MK5 Series 2 (MVP/Xceed) doesn't have a belly panel door so you have to disable it in the machine options.

Not sure if the NZ menu is the same, but on NSW software the belly panel setting is in Operator Setup/Selections -> Machine Options -> Belly Panel Door (Yes/No)

Interesting, might have a look at that.

Is it strange to randomly start to receive this sprite error or is that an indicator to a faulty part?

I don't know what the issue could be, it might even be something not sitting perfectly straight e.g. between the backplane and one of the boards etc. One person on here also noted they had to push down really hard to get a board to sit properly and this fixed their problem.

Given that the game boots it can't be bad ROMs or anything like that, so that narrows it down to something like a loose board, dying RAM or even a corroded/cut trace somewhere. Unfortunately, without taking the entire machine apart it's anyone's guess to what's causing it to crash and reboot all the time.
