Stampede startup issue
« on: December 23, 2023, 07:14:42 PM »
I have a Stampede that wouldn't startup the other day. When you power it up it would pulse, audio and lights. Tested the switching power supply on the bench and it worked fine. I suspected the lower board and replaced C5 which looked like it had already been replaced. Same issue. My next plan was to test that big transformer. So I removed the speaker panel. While doing that, the wires to the speaker came apart. The speaker wires were very short and just twisted together with a piece of tape. I thought nothing of it and would deal with it later. Then I slide out the hopper. Checked and tested some things but didn't find anything wrong. With hopper and speaker still out, I powered it up and it worked. Now I suspected the hopper. I checked the connectors and slid it back in. The machine powered up normal. So I figured I did something on the hopper to get it to work. Next I extended the speaker wires and added connectors in case I ever had to take it out again. I put the speaker panel back and powered it up and had the same pulsing issue. Weird. I disconnected a speaker wire and the machine powered up normal. I shut power reconnected speaker wire and same pulsing. Disconnected speaker wire and powered It up normally. While it was operating normal, I reconnected the speaker and everything works fine. So to recap, the machine won't power up unless the speaker is disconnected and if reconnected while powered up, everything is fine. Any ideas? Thanks

I've attached a short video of powering up with speaker connected and then disconnected. I'm not sure how a speaker could affect a circuit like this?

There's some level of power going to the speaker to drive it, I suspect you have a short that is being caused when the speaker loop is closed.  I would trace the speaker wires to the backplane and check the wires  to make sure there no damage.

I checked, there's no short. If you disconnect the speaker wire, power up the machine normally, then reconnect the speaker wire, everything works fine. Including the sound. There are 3 wires going to the speaker both + were connected together. I'm going to try using one or the other and see if that changes anything.

Update:
I tried a different speaker but got the same pulsing results on power up.

There are 3 wires in the audio cable going to the speaker. Black is ground and 2 reds. One red is AUDIO HIGH and the other is AUDIO FULL. The 2 reds were connected together and to the speaker +.
I disconnected one red wire (Audio Full) and everything works normal. If I just connect the Audio Full, Pulsing on startup. I've attached a schematic of the Audio. Looing at the Slot I/O board, it appears that C62 has the slightest bulge. I've attached a picture and its the cap on the right.
I could change the cap but after that it's over my head. Any ideas?

If I'm allowed to ask, Are there any companies that will repair and or help troubleshoot specific boards? There's no place local to bring this to. Thanks

I don't know of any slot machine repair shops near you, because number one, where is "local" ?

Have you looked on the homepage of NLG?
Take note of "KLAR Electronic Slot Repair"...they're located somewhere in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"Midwest Slots" & Jim is somewhere in...well...the Midwest?  :duh: ....haha
He's a pretty good source for parts.
There's also GTA up in Canada somewhere...he's got machines & parts.

I've noticed there's none on the homepage from the East coast.
There's a bunch of others advertising on the homepage too, but it's not exactly clear as to what their services are or where they are?
They probably sell slot machines and probably have some spare parts for sale.
I'm sure they're all good folks.

Give 'em a call !...what have you've got to lose?
It looks like the short is definitely on your audio board.
Maybe they'll have a decent audio board for your WMS Stampede?

Thanks,
I have called, emailed and submitted online forms. Just haven't had any luck. Talked to NLG, extremely helpful with some troubleshooting tips but don't repair parts. One guy tried like crazy to sell me boards with different numbers and looked completely different but "guaranteed" it would fix my sound problem. I've been unable to find that one capacitor to replace or I'd try that. We just love this machine and want to keep it tip top. It's working fine now with the one speaker wire disconnected but the volume is lower and some sound effects aren't playing. Thanks again and I'll keep trying all those places.

Give us a better, clear photo of the component-side of the board.
With some model/version numbers.
They may be etched onto thecircuit board itself or on labels?
Maybe someone will have exactly what you need?

Recap: Power up and get pulsing noise and leds. The middle 3 of 5 LEDS on I/O board will pulse along with the fail LED. There are 3 wires going to the one speaker (audio ground, Audio high and Audio Full) If you disconnect the Audio Full wire, the machine powers up normal, 1 bong. Audio works but is lower than normal and I think some sounds effects are missing. I believe there is an audio clip played only when using the arm that I don't hear. Not 100% sure on that as most seem to be fine.
I've attached a picture of the I/O board (A-17686-03) if anyone would have a lead on it.
Or if anyone would have C62 (Electrolytic, radial, 1000UF, 25V, 12-13mmdiameter, about 17mm high, leads 7-8mm) I would replace it and try it out.
Or if anyone could troubleshoot and repair the board, I can send it.

I've called or emailed every recource I could find online with no luck so far.
