Help: What did I get myself into?
« on: January 26, 2019, 05:46:45 PM »
I've bought and repaired several slots off craigslist over the past few years. I play them awhile sell them and find another. It has turned into an addiction. My repairs have been easy thus far. Batteries, chips, and resets. I just found and bought one today that may not be worth the effort.
It is a S+ Slant Top Double Diamond 3 Coin Multiplier GC36CI9 built 9/95. I didn't really look it over too good when I picked it up since the guys asking price was less than $100. Typical answer "I got it from a guy that owed me money and I haven't messed with it". I asked if it had ever been left outside and he said no. It looked decent and it powered up, lit up, and the bill acceptor cycled. No numbers displayed (I thought that was odd) Usually get a tilt code. I gave him the money and loaded it up. One plus was, it had the keys.
Once home, I opened it up and looked for the MPU board. It was heavily rusted at the bottom and I had a tough time removing it. Some may already know where I'm going with this. Once I broke the rust bond and the board came out, what was left of an exploded battery fell out and the acid and corrosion is all over the board and chips. It looks like a crime scene. I have never seen this before. OMG its bad! I'll try and post pictures. Please try not to laugh at my misery. The board appears to be toast and when I tried to carefully remove the chips, lots of the pins just broke right off. The sockets are bad as well as other items on the board.
I'm certain I can source another board off of feebay for around $60 or $80. Than I have to get new SP and SS chips and a good battery if one is not included with the new board. All that will cost more than I paid for the slot to begin with. The chips were labeled SP709 and SS363X (acid ate away the SS label and I could'nt see last digit). After that is done, I will be in it for around $200. Is the effort worth it? What do you suggest I do?
I did put a S+ board from a Perfect 10 2CM and it powers up, errors clear, and the reels spin (ready for play). The coin acceptor is different and the SP and SS chip were different so I did'nt go any farther with it.
One other question. If I get a new SP709 chip. How do I know which type I need (0,1,4,5,12). The reels chip would be SS3631 0 92.584 Double Diamond 3CM. The website I searched has it as SS3631 "0" does the zero mean the type and does that also me I need a SP709 type "0" The MPU Board number is 75505704 Rev B.
When and if I do invest the extra time and effort to fix what I do know thats wrong there still might be issues with the coin in and coin out opterations. Is the juice worth the squeeze? What would the experts do (yes, thats you reading this)?

Wow that went South quick. All is not lost. I'll try and answer your questions.
Yeah to no surprise the board is toast. Our vendors on the home page sell them also, so easy to come by. We have members who sell chips also. There are lots of people who like the slant top machines.
When a chip is listed as for a 0, 1,4, 5, 12. It will fit all of those games. The double diamond game is a 0 type game (no special features). You don't need to be specific.
I have an upright that was about the same, toasted board etc. but swapping boards told me it worked. I put in a coin and it played.  The SS chip can be bought for whatever percentage you want the payback set at.
I would say to hang tight and let some of our vendors contact you and we can likely get you going pretty easy. It's probably not as bad as you think. Although I would clean some of the rust out of the bottom.         Moderator, can we get this moved to S and S+ games?  Thanks.

Thanks for the fast response Shaggy! I don't want to give up on it if it can be reasonably saved. I love saving thing from going to land fills.

I thought the different types of SP chips might have to do with Bill acceptor (which it has). I have a S+ clear and Set chip already. All the other chips on a replacement board will work, I just need to install the correct SP and SS chips? Is that right?

Yes that's all if it has a battery. The Chips don't affect the B/V type.  If you have the set chip (usually a Set 15 for the B/V) you should be ready to go. When it did the initial spin with the other board, it sounded like it was probably working. Our vendors on here will likely save you money over E-Bay. They give our members a better deal most of the time. Also there are some members of E-Bay (not all, as we have folks on there too) who have been known to sell some shoddy parts. I try to buy everything I need from the people on here. Unless there are some unforeseen troubles, you should be up and running pretty quick.

Understood. I hope someone on here tosses me a life line.

If I get the board replaced correctly, it should clean up nicely. It still has decals from the Barbary Coast Casino (1979-2007) in Las Vegas. It's nice to know a little history about a slot machine. I've actually found tokens from casinos in other slot machines that help identify where they might have been used.

Luckily I have had another forum member come to my rescue on some issues but, the coin comparitor is lifeless and automatically discharge coin or token and no credit is given. I've tried both example coins in the comparitor with no luck. The LED is not on and I've even tried adjusting the screw. Nothing helps. I can press the button on the coin optics and it gives a credit each time pressed up to 2 credits (donor board and chips are from a 2CM). I can spins the reels and it even hit a small payout. It attempted to dispense coins but instantly show a 3100 error and an intermittent 3200 error with no coins dispensed with coins in the hopper. I attempted a hopper test but all it does is hums. Might it be jammed or just bad? Maybe I need to pull the hopper and inspected it. Perhaps the optics need cleaned and inspected. This thing has probably been sitting in a dusty garage or storage for 10 to 15 years.
Any advice on the comparitor, 3100 and 3200 errors would be greatly appreciated.

The light on the comparator does not come on until the door is closed and latched. The hopper is giving you a coin jam in hopper (3200) error. There could be a coin jammed or the hopper brake could be stuck or water could of damaged the hopper. Pull the hopper and examine it for a stuck coin. You can release the hopper brake by hand and try turning it. Sometimes the brakes stick especially from lack of use. Can you clear the errors by opening and closing the door and latching it? The machine won't take a coin as long as an error code is showing. Try to clear the codes first and then work on the comparator. I'll link the error codes list.

Yes, I can clear the error codes. It appears that I at least have 2 problems (coin in and hopper) I'll look at the hopper later tonight or tomorrow. I wish I had a spare or known good comparitor to swap out to troubleshoot the coin in problem.
How do I clean the optics? Not even sure how to find them.

Can you post a pic of your coin comparator? Just to make sure the right one is in it.

Pictures attached. I'm fairly certain the coin comparitor is the correct type I thing it might be dead. I have tried adjusting the scensitivity all the way way counter clockwise but still all coins (token and quarter) are rejected no matter which example I have in it. I can add credit pressing the button on the coin optic below the comparitor.  I thought it might be a door optic problem but, once closed, all errors clear and the reels spin (ready to play). Coins are rejected and fall right through to the tray with no credit given.
Another question.... In the second picture I attached what is the plastic jug with no lid used for? Is there something missing?

That is correct comparitor. Check to see if the arm on the back of it can move in and out to accept or reject, it may be bent.

If I remember correct the plastic bottle use to have a top with a tube. It was hooked to the inside ledge just below the door. It was used to catch spilled drinks. Kept they from running all over inside the machine. Have you trying to re-seat the plugs on the coin optics and comparitor? Comparitor could also have a bad cap on the board.

And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

Thanks for the spilled drink containment explanation. I'll remove whats left of the plastic bottle.

I have removed, inspected, and re-seated all the associated connectors. I'm leaning towards a bad comparitor. They are not cheap on feebay ($60). I want to be certain before I spent the money.

Check KLar to see if they have any comparitors. You can find them on the home page here at the bottom of the sponsers section. I have replacement axial caps for these comparitors. Not sure it’s the problem, but they do go bad. Check to see if yours has ever been replaced. If your interested in trying a new cap first, send me a PM and I’ll send you one NC..

I guess you could temporary try to bend that bar outward on back of comparitor just enough so that it can't reject coins and see if machine will accept coins.
