LCD monitors that fit an IGT PE+ upright cabinet
« on: January 16, 2024, 12:57:26 PM »
Have an IGT PE+ upright cabinet. Removing the bad Ceronix 1490 monitor.

Used the great info here to convert the signals to VGA.  Have the conversion working good, but just need advice on mounting an LCD.

Can get a 14" LCD monitor which looks to fit the existing opening.
Am wondering if it's do-able to replace the entire front glass and go with a larger display.

Would any of the I-games or GK 17" monitors or something in between fit?

What works the best for mounting?  to inside of door or in cabinet?
Thanks

This is what the actual LCD drop in looks like.

Yes that helps.  :thank_you:
Wondering if something like this would fit..  https://www.casinotech.com/-PNL-LTB150X1-L01
couldn't find any info on Google about if it had a VGA input, or the dimensions
Thinking I could maybe fasten it to the old Ceronix bare chassis ??

Would like to have the kit from Ceronix, but out of my price range.

The difference between a upright, slant or bartop as far as the screen is concerned is simply the mount.

but Wow that is cheap.... I would be contacting them and asking about the interface.
There is no real information on the site about it.

The problem with using a regular LCD monitor as you know is having to do a conversion.

I have about 8 MPU's for My PE+ - easier than swapping out chips when I want to swap games.
I have not wanted to do the conversion - on 8 boards. So it would be sweet to get a panel like that if it works natively.
I am sure I could MacGyver a mount even if was sheet metal or bent shelf mounts with velro to hold the screen against it.

Please post back with your findings......

That looks to be just a LCD panel itself, not any of the electronic components needed to make up and entire display (power supply, A/D board, Inverter, etc).

PE+ machines are difficult to get working with an off the shelf monitor because they have inverted sync, color, (or both) signals.  I believe it's also CGA so that has to be converted to VGA for modern monitors to use after you get the signals in the proper polarity.  There's some discussion here and on the old board about it, but I don't recall anyone ever saying they were successful.  It's definitely not a plug and play proposition except for the Ceronix solution, which as you noted is pretty pricey.

People have done it successfully but it usually means moding the MPU.
Which per my last post I am certainly not up doing 8x. I would rather keep it native.
I still think we should call as they may have some options.

Interesting.  So they modified the signal at the MPU instead of the monitor.  I think the ones I recall reading they were trying to do it on the monitor end.  Was it documented?  I suppose I should do some searching on the board again and see if I can refresh my memory.

Well duh Kevin rounded the various posts up and pinned them here  :duh: :duh:  Looks like some of the pics died because they were hosted elsewhere, but there's still quite a bit of good information here:

I did the chip conversion on the MPU.  I used an IC socket to make it easy to return to original chip.  Seems like it took less than an hour.
Haven't played with the rest of the mod yet, but it was visible on the computer monitor.

Ah, I got it now.  Reading comprehension isn't my strong point tonight as I missed the sentence about you modifying your MPU board.  Sorry about that.

The Ceronix is a 15" LCD.  I don't think you could fit anything larger than that in there.  You could probably pick up a cheap 15" LCD monitor up on Ebay and once you have it displaying correctly mount it to the door.  You'd have to fabricate you own mounts, but it should be doable.

Let us know how it goes.  I went the Ceronix route with mine, but that was a few years back and the kit was right around $350.00, not the $500+ that it is now.

Thanks, that's the one I meant to link to, but I somehow copied the link to the entire PE forum...sigh.  I updated my post with the correct link (hopefully!).

It seems like people were going different routes in the thread to accomplish the same thing.  There's the one on reply #19, and then on the final post in the thread.  Inbetween some information is missing, and some of the links are dead.  It looks like someone was working on a commercial modification too, but given it was overseas and about a decade ago who knows if it ever went anywhere or is available?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Would there be much demand for a "commercial" type of adapter?
Maybe one that would clip on to an IC in the existing MPU and provide signals to an 8200 cga/vga converter board?
or should I ask this in a new thread?

Probably a new thread.
For my 2c I would prefer to do this the same way IGT does it (not on the MPU).

Thanks Jay,  I agree, would be the best  route.....
Is there any info on what IGT  or     Ceronix does to convert the PE + output  signals to the modern monitors.

Holy 14 year old Topic Batman! :mummy: ...haha

The Ceronix monitor has jumpers to use inverted video.

If the original monitor can do the proper inversion external to the motherboard someone needs to reverse engineer this and build an adapter.

I would certainly be interested. I'm not super skilled at soldering, and the idea of modifying my MPU boards has always been a sticking point for me.

As others said, it would be ideal if someone could build something that would do what the Ceronix replacement LCD monitors does, as they seem to convert the CGA signal from the machine and display the image on a modern LCD panel.
