Slot machine temperatures
« on: August 04, 2015, 10:49:48 PM »
Hi guys,

Just curious what is considered "normal" internal slot machine temperatures.  Video slots are going to run hotter that a reel slots mainly due to the heat that LCDs and CRTs generate.  I went into "Diagnostics" on my WMS BB1 and noticed that the operating temperature was running at 89F.  All fans are running.  OEMs put fans in the machines for a reason, but on some machines like a standard IGT S2000, some claim that the fans can be turned off.  I ran mine disconnect for a while, but currently I'm running all of my machines with fans activated for peace of mind.

What would be considered a dangerous temperature to be running?  If the machine shuts down, I guess that's the indicator that things may be running a tad warm.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jason

That reminds me of a funny story.

Way back when Games of Nevada was starting up they had a engineer that developed their poker system who swore that machines didn't need fans.

His theory was that a machine temperature could be as high as 185 degrees and everything would work fine.

Unfortunately a light skinned customer in some casino had rested her arm on the top - metal door frame and got 3rd degree burns.

Fans were installed after that.

When I fix something in a machine I always use capacitors rated at 105c because I have seen so many boards fail due to old, dried up, capacitors.

To answer your question...... 120 F is a safe top limit.

The capacitors last longer in my opinion.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

I put 105F N.O. thermo switches in series with my IGT fans. The iGame fan(s) come on after about an hour. (LCD)   Many 'sessions' the fans in the S2000's don't turn on at all. Cooler is better for electronic components. Especially electrolytic capacitors.

89F for a BB1 is not bad.  Our BB2's generally hover around 110F-112F, and the NXT2 CPUs generate more heat.

I have one of those old GON poker machines. I turn it on when I'm ready to play then off when I am done. I posted a year or two ago about how it got hot enough to cook a hotdog inside. I need to take the time to install a fan in it.

I have an old Bally "VideoTwentyone" that does have a fan but I still think I could put a grill inside it and cook a burger.  :th_Smiley-bbq:
