S Slot, looking for a main transformer
« on: December 16, 2023, 12:42:36 AM »
Anyone happen to have one or a source for one?

Why I'm looking for one:  Machine was working fine, then wasn't. At power on, lights come on, reel lock, and that's all she does. Since it's a new to me machine, I went through checking connections. Didn't find anything, so started looking through the power supply. At the main fuses, I have 120V, 12V (should be 24V), and 0V (should be 16V).  To verify, I pulled the fuses to remove load on those supplies and checked again.

Thanks!

Is this a S machine or a S plus machine?  need a picture of what you are working on!  reason I ask-- you said the reels were locked, stiff,  this USUALLY indicates that the board is receiving the required power.

Hey Jim!

Thanks for the response!  I'm nearly 100% positive it's an S, not an S+ machine (no backplane on the bottom). I've attached pics of the working area of the transformer and the machine in general.

In a previous life, the MPU suffered an explosive battery, which I found after dragging it home. Looks like it was sitting in that condition for years.  I neutralized any remaining corrosives, cleaned up the board, buzzed out the traces in the effective area for continuity shorts. Other than the blob of yuck stuck to the board, no issues found. Replaced the battery, and buttoned it all up. Everything except the display was working, and I was in the process of chasing that issue when I woke to find the machine catatonic.

That is a S machine you have and it's extremely rare for one of those transformers to go bad.  There isn't  a 16V tap off of it.  24VAC and 7-8VAC is it.  They are center tapped so it's important that you use the correct reference (not cabinet ground) to read the voltages.  Attached is a wiring diagram that should be helpful.

Thank you, Tilt!  I see I'm not the only one working with a fuzzy wiring diagram.  LOL

Went back in and took measurements.

3-4 2v
3-5 2v

Hmm, well ok.  Just wanted to make sure you weren't measuring something incorrectly before you got a new transformer only to find out that wasn't the problem.  They don't fail very often.

No problem, I totally appreciate it. I read through several of your posts related to S+ machines, and it's been ages since I've dealt with a transformer like this one.

I've moved this to the classifieds section in the hopes that it might get more attention there. Good luck.

Did you isolate the two AC voltages to see if one of them is being pulled down?/un hook 3-4-5 and test the voltages at the tab of the xformer, the hook up the common, 3 and 4 and see if that voltage is normal, do the same for 3 and 5 and see what results you get.

I believe I have a transformer that will work for you , its from a s plus, but they used the same voltages as the s model.

Thank you, Jim! I'll check that out to be sure and report back. I appreciate you looking through your parts stash

Ok, after leaving it disconnected from AC for a week, went in to measure and....it started working again.  Huh, ok.

Jim, thank you for your input and assistance. I'm going to message you about spare part.
