The dreaded 40 error code on a S5500
« on: February 13, 2021, 06:30:14 AM »
Hi. I have got an issue with a Bally S5500 board. This board worked perfectly until the battery went low. The owner did not know how to solder a new battery and brought the board to an electronics shop. There, they installed a new battery but I think they overheated where +  was supposed to be soldered and in the end, + was nowhere to be soldered. They consequently bypassed + to Jw12 and It worked fine like this.  As years went by, battery died again , but the owner tried to reset the machine with U12/U15 clear chips. He put them the wrong way and got a 80 code and finally nothing at all in the display.  At that point, I got the board.  I reprogrammed U12,U15, U3,U4 and tested them in a known good board to make sure they were ok. I desoldered the dead battery and realized that the only way to solder minus was to bypass it as well, I chose to bypass it to Jw1...  81 went away , I got a 83 F, which I got rid of with a ram clear. However, Now I got a 40 tilt I cannot clear.  My questions are the following ones: could that come from my bypass to Jw1? If so, where could I bypass minus without damaging anything? What part of the board deals with reels problems?   Last thing I noticed: the board needs chips to be cleared, jumpers must be on Jw10  as well otherwise 83 F won’t go away...   if anyone can help it would really be appreciated.  Thank you

If you use a battery holder you can connect the negative lead to a screw that holds the board to the tray.

Solder the positive wire to both pins of JW12 , like it was before.

After you do the clear, be sure the reels finish their calibration dance before you close the door.

Do you the issue might come from my soldering the negative to Jw1?

I'm not sure. Someone with more knowledge of these boards would know. Like Badbaud or other Bally pro's here on NLG.
