chrome clean up

Hi all,

     Doing some clean up and lubing.   I have a couple reel bezels that show real early signs like they want to start pitting. 
Whats the best to use to clean up before chrome treatment/wax?

Jim, I'm using Brasso on the chrome and Meguiar's mirror glaze. Regarding the early signs of pitting.
Those deposits are really hard to polish off. A razor blade in a small holder works best. Testing first with the blade almost parallel to the part and moving gently in as side ways motion cuts those deposits right off.
This has worked for me, but use caution as every situation is a little different. Recommend testing in an area not seen as much like below the belly glass or side of the door. Use little down force to avoid possible chrome damage.

You can see the difference in the chrome. All the chrome on this machine had mineral deposits.
Going to finish the top glass frame, hopefully next week after I get the new glass done.

Hey David, thanks for the tips.  I am going to pick the stuff up tomorrow and give it a try.   Appreciate the advice.  I'll post how it works out.

Special note, use a blade that is slightly dull, or file corners on a new blade and run the edge over something to take the newness off.

Brasso alone with cloth does well on small deposits.  Which was all I was trying to remove.   Tried a small little section on side using scotch brite and Brasso - not recommended.

I've used 0000 steel wool with good results.

same using 0000 steel wool and Turtle Was chrome polish.

Scotch bright, is that the same as one of those scratchy pads? Used one of those pads once. Big mistake, used Brasso to remove scratches.

Turtle wax chrome polish works great. I have also used CLR and 0000 steel wool on rust and the white deposits that form on the chromed pot metal.

Awesome  from dollar tree is awesome for cleaning yellow smoke stains from reel strips and the cabinet and 30 year old dried beer from the coin tray.

I like to use tin foil and water just rub until you get a grey paste then wipe off the results can be really good
try it out on somewhere discrete first

I will try the tin foil method when I get home.   Sounds promising.

Yes the foil method sound interesting, I have had some good results with this product from AutoZone ($6.99) worked well on my 69 Star special nickel slot tarnish issues.

another tip I picked up from a car restore forum was to use windolene on your chrome first its meant to fill the small pits in the chrome
