Power supply/CPU fans

Hey guys,


Trying to understand if I have dead fans in my 5v/12v power supply and my 24v power supply.


I took them apart and cleaned/oiled the fans.  1 fan in the 5/12 PS always runs.  Do the other two kick in with temp spikes, or should they always be on?  Just trying to determine if I have a couple of dead fans.

Jason,    both of the fans run constantly.  you can purchase a  similar fan  from Mouser electronics.  same size and voltage, not sure of the rpm's

Thanks Jim.  Interestingly enough, it looks like they’re working.  A Simple Green/hot water bath and oiling the spindles broke them free and they’re spinning away now.

So along these same lines, I cleaned and oiled the CPU fans and PS fan on the CPU.  I did this on both of my 1ghz CPUs.  Before cleaning and after, I plugged them into a wall socket to observe the fan behavior and results.  I noticed on both CPUs that only one of the 2 fans run.  When they are in the machine, I can hear the fan speeds fluctuate.  Since they are 3 pin fans, do they fire and run based on temperature?  The CPU PS fan is always on.

I believe the 3 wire fans have a tach signal that goes from the fan back to the mpu on the 3rd wire. If the fan tach signal is missing the mpu knows the fan has stopped running, the mpu can then declare an alarm and shut down before overtemp damage can occur. Also, on some designs the mpu monitors temp and only turns on fan when the temp gets above a certain setting, whereas on others the fan runs all the time. So I think it varies on how the mpu is made. With some computers you can get into the bios setup and configure all this but on a slot machine mpu I don't know if that is possible.

There are some pwr. supplies that do not even have fans on them.  The one's with them will most of the time run and will modulate upon how long the machine has been left on etc. controlled by the mpu.  No biggie as long as you know they work.  A fan failure will result in a cap(s) blowing in that specific pwr. supply given, extreme conditions.
