It's a timer with a group (Gang) of micro switches that ride on a set of cams.
Depending on the timer power it may only run when the game is being played or
it may run while the machine is on.
It is probably a setup that turns off and on some type of attraction lights.

That might be wired into the lights around the outside of the feature glass on that 873.

Wow.  Learn something new everyday thanks to you guys.  The 873 puts on a nice light show when the jackpot is hit.  I have 2 of them and they are the favorites of my elderly parents and in laws.
