These old slot machine are not programmable like the newer models. The 873 is a 5 coin 5 line machine. Buy playing the max bet, you increase you odds on winning something every time

Most likely the machine was feeling good. Give it a chance, I’m sure it will take all the coins back plus some.


Now it’s possible that someone added some extra symbols to a reel.
As some reels will only have 1 or 2 symbols that are the same.
Check the reels, you’ll notice the difference in the amount of symbols on each reel.


It’s also possible that someone took a reel with a more equal amount of symbols
and replaced a reel that was over loaded with plumbs, oranges and or bells.


Or a reel with lots of cherries was moved to the first reel position.

attached is what your reel tapes should look like ... the 873-4zz uses m-222-[97-99].  SEF = "fat seven".


since the 4ZZ is a lightning/jackpot only game, I woulda thought payouts weren't that common.  If you get a chance, post a pic of the payout table.

changing the payback requires changing the slotted index discs attached to each reel and changing the reel tapes to match the index discs....and possibly changing the reel wipers, wiring and payout disc.


swapping the reels around may or may not work ... e.g. there's no guarantee that the index disc slot depth for a seven on reel 2 is the same as the slot depth for a seven on reel 3.


if you have a single line game, you have a decent chance that swapping reels or replacing index index discs/tapes will work without needing to rewire the wiper contact plates or modify the wipers.


if you have a 3 or 5 line machine, you'd have an almost zero chance. The 3/5 line games reel contact plate wiring is complex and matched to traces and extra wipers available on the payout counter.   The index disc slot depths have to account for the symbols on all paylines, not just the center one. 


for example on reel 1, the slot depth may be different for a bar on the top line depending on what symbol is on the bottom line because the wipers need to be positioned differently on the reel contact boards.

Quick & dirty fix is to put a plug in the index disc.

 Thanks for the replies I think I'll just leave it be thanks for all the info I will post a pic of machine it's not the greatest picture but I am out of town right now ,still missing a few lights I have on order .

just to make sure, that machine should only pay when you have 3 sevens or bars lined up on the same active payline.


as you might guess since the minimum pay is $5, you shouldn't get paid very often. 


if you are getting paid when you don't have three bars/7's on the same line, then you do have a problem - typically wiper misalignment on the reel contact plates.
