Nice write up, now I'm with ya  :applause:

Yes, the board definitely has a problem with the EEPROM, not the battery.  Since you've installed EEPROMs on the MPU board you don't need or want one on the motherboard.  I would double check the solder connections on the EEPROM you put in at U85.  If those look good then replace it.  When you installed the EEPROM on the motherboard you remembered to remove R179 too correct?

Titlt,

I have removed the eeprom from the backplane. I only did that to see if it would solve my problem, it did not.

I am attaching some pictures of the eeprom installation on the MPU. I am hoping it may provide you with a clue to determine it it is OK.
Thanks so much for helping me.

I think that chip was soldered in backward.

I could be wrong.

I see, thanks... I am going to see the tech who did the work on Monday and bring him the board... He said he would take a look at it.
Could you explain what backwards means?  is it upside down or something else.  Thanks so much.

There should be a notch printed on the circuit board at one end but I can't tell from your pictures.
The chip should either have a notch on one end or a recessed hole on top.
Your photos have bad lighting....I cannot verify.

Like I said, I could be wrong...anyone that can solder in IC components SHOULD know which way a chip be orientated.

All that looks fine, it's oriented correctly (not put in backwards).  Ask him to replace it, something is wrong with it.

Thanks for verifying Tilt.... I didn't have a machine nearby to check against but didn't hurt to ask.

:cool_thumb_up: .  Your machine wouldn't have anything installed at U85 though unless you did the mod.

Something about not needing a eeprom on the motherboard when U85 has the chip there?

A mod I came up with a few years back.  Install an EEPROM on the MPU board and remove the one on the motherboard.  Designed for people with 2 or more 3902 MPU boards who want to swap games back and forth easily.  You have to add a EEPROM every 3902 board you want to use, but after that you can swap them in and out like a giant Atari cartridge.  Keeps all the credits, settings, etc on the MPU board.  Here's the original post:

Thanks Ken.

Good to hear lookes.  I know some people have done the board mod, but I think a lot more went the swap the EEPROM and MPU route so they didn't have to modify their MPUs.  Wish we could do it with 044 boards.  There's an empty socket that could be used, but not all of the needed signals go to it so you'd have to cut traces, add jumpers etc.  It'd be a hack job and I'm not real fond of those.
