19" I-Game 044 "Printer Comm Error"
« on: February 08, 2021, 02:58:56 PM »
I've got a 19" I-Game with an 044 Processor that is giving me problems with the Netplex components.

I set up the game, it played great, no errors other than the standard Validation Error when not using a TITO.

I installed a TITO board in it and found out pretty quickly that the Power Distribution Box was bad, no DC outputs. That explains why my service light never lit.

I replaced the PDU and set up the TITO device, everything worked perfectly. Powered down the machine to do some work on the button panel.

Once I powered it back up I got a "Printer Communication Error" and noticed I had lost power to my printer. No green light, or any lights.

I swapped out the Printer thinking it had died, still no lights. Swapped the Printer Extension Harness and it worked again.

Powered down for the night, powered it on this morning and the Printer is dead again.
Swapped Harnesses, Swapped Printers, Tried the Netplex Harness, the Netplex Distro Board and still nothing.

I am getting the 13vdc but not the 24vdc to the Top Box.

Where on the Backplane can I check for power to the Top Box? I've changed everything except the Backplane, even MPU and Flashboard. And main Power Supply.

Checked both 15 amp fuses too.

Is there a possibility that the Backplane is bad?

Guess I'll swap that tomorrow morning. Just can't figure out why it had power, then not again once it sat overnight.

Thanks,

Try swapping the power supply?

Yes, tried a few different Power Supplies.

I have both 13vdc and 24vdc at Backplane Connector J13, which I believe is power in from the PS.

On Backplane Connector J3, which I believe is the harness that runs to the Netplex Distro Board in the Top Box, I am missing my 24vdc output. Which leads me to believe it's a bad Backplane.

I'll swap it out and see what happens.

Update,

Turns out it was a bad Backplane. Missing the 24vdc to the Netplex Distro Board in the Top box.

Really? Good find ash.
Was a trace burned out on the backplane connecting between?

I haven't done a thorough inspection of the backplane yet, but just at first glance I didn't see anything obvious.

There was one through hole component mounted slightly above J3 that had longer leads than needed and they were folded over onto the board with a large amount of solder. I plan on removing that component and trimming the leads down some and removing that excess solder. It could have bridged a trace.

I'll also rework all of the solder joints on the two J connectors that carry that 24vdc to the top box and see what happens.

I hate to waste an 044 backplane.

I'll keep you posted if I can get it to work in a different machine.
