IGT S-2000 Power up problem

Hi
When I turn on the slot machine the display would dimly fade on and off and the slot doesn't boot up.  If I turn the machine off and back on it powers up normally. This has been happening for about a week.  Now when I turn the machine on the display remains dark and it still doesn't boot up. It does power up normally if I turn it off and back on again.  I've reseated connectors and the problem remains.  Has anyone experienced this before and know of a fix, or suggestions of how to troubleshoot this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

With the power switch OFF, slide out the reels, and check to make sure the PSU behind the reels is fully pushed into the connector.
If you still have the flaky power problems, it's quite likely the PSU is going...check for swollen capacitors inside it.

check the power supply voltages.  bottom plug om the motherboard is the power cable coming directly from the power supply. measure the dc voltages, black meter probe to any metal chassis, red to red wire, 13vdc, orange wire, 25vdc,  solid black wire up on top of connector, around 6 vdc.   let the plug in place, insert the probe into the back of the connector.

when the capacitors are old, dry and leak power, they sometimes power up on a reboot. We used to do this with arcade games that wouldn't boot the first time, on, if it didn't start, turn off, then on again. It's best to repair the power supply early. there is a thread here somewhere showing each of the types of power supplies, the capacitor values, etc.  I'll see if I can find it.

this should help. you can always check the voltages as stated above also of course. you should check both when the issue is happening and after the reboot boots up. you will likely see a difference

Here is one on the bench waiting for capacitors. Only a couple are bulging,  but I'll probably change most.

WOW...thank you ALL for your very useful replies, I'm very grateful and appreciative.

I'll get to work on this over the weekend, I felt it was a power supply issue.  The power supply was replaced 3 years ago from the guy I purchased the slot from - may I ask how long power supplies typically last in a slot, and recommendations as to where I should purchase a new one if needed? I don't know if there are different qualities of power supplies, if that's the problem I would think that it shouldn't crap out in 3 years with home use

The "new" power supply was most likely a used working power supply (most are) so it's hard to say how long it will last.

Makes sense, thank you.  So if the power supply is faulty I most likely will need to get it repaired as opposed to finding a new one?

They're cheap enough just to get another used but working one.  If you really wanted one close to new you could get a working one and recap it.  I have several machines but have only had a couple of power supply failures, my G23 being the latest.  My machines get pretty light use though too.  It's really up to you, one of the members here was repairing some power supplies, not sure if he still is though.

Get ahold of member Trisail...he's really good.
Think about it, these PSU's are going on 20 years old...the capacitors dry up even if you don't use them.
Then when you turn them on, the surge just nukes 'em.
That's why just changing the caps on them helps a lot....not always, but most of the time.

Thank you everyone for your input. My meter died on me so I haven't been able to take voltages yet. I do have one on the way. I decided to take the power supply out to take a look at the caps, the top on some of them look to be bulging some, what do you think?  Assuming the power supply is crapping out is it best to replace the caps or get another one?

After reviewing the extremely helpful info others provided me earlier the caps didn't look too healthy. Kaput...

The rest of the power supply looks good, so I think I want to try to repair it. Does anyone sell a cap kit for these power supplies?

Mouser.com, Digi-Key.com, etc etc. they all have caps...not kits...just the caps.
How's the caps on the small vertical boards?....good luck!
You should make a video repairing that thing.

Well I decided to go with a new (refurbished) power supply and to my surprise the problem persists.  Something that I noticed I accidently omitted in my original post is that NetPlex is down message is what's fading off and on the display, I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I think the power supply I received has a problem and I'm working on an exchange, is there anything else I should suspect causing the NetPlex is down message?

For future reference, SuzoHapp sells power supply capacitor kits.

Bulging or leaking is an obvious visible sign of a bad capacitor, but keep in mind that capacitors often go bad without any visible clues. Do not assume a power supply is ok just because the capacitors look good.
