40pin DIP to ZIF adapter
« on: February 20, 2024, 10:31:52 AM »
So we all have these 40-pin DIP slots on our S2000 boards.  Pushing/pulling chips is a pain and it's hard not to bend/damage the chips too.  So being an I.T. guy, I'm like - why???? this is so silly when ZIF sockets have been around for many decades.  Anyway, I was wondering if anyone found a source to go from the standard 40-pin DIP (round-hole ones really suck on the 1270) to a ZIF without building a whole thing with a breadboard (looking for something easy, not a difficult project or lots of $$).  It would just make swapping key/game chips SO much easier and less likely to damage.  Pics of what we have and what I want to switch to are attached.  I ordered something like the ZIF from Amz but I suspect it won't go into the existing sockets correctly or the pins may be too short.... we'll see... thought I would ask the community if anyone found an easy solution.

ZiF sockets work well on the 1270 boards.
Just push the Amazon ZIF socket into the socket on the board and your good to go.

Well...I've been using them for many years.
I don't really like them.

The ones I have from 3M have a lever that's really hard to to release or push down.
Maybe I'll try a different brand?
Back then, they were the only company making them.
Qbert, is yours easy to pull up or push down?

I just made a short video just to show you how hard it is to work that lever...>>>

Just push the Amazon ZIF socket into the socket on the board and your good to go.

That's the only place you really need one. The tooled socket on the 1270 SB chip is hard to get all the pins lined up.

I have removed and installed DIPS over 3000 times in the last year, mostly on IGT 50X boards. I have not bent a single pin. Use the correct tools. Straighten the pins before installing if needed. Use a DIP removal tool that pulls them straight up instead of rocking them out with a screwdriver and a prayer lol...
I also touch the pins to a foam pad with a small amount of contact cleaner with protectant in it before I install my test chips. It leaves a small amount of protectant/lubricant on the socket pins to make it easier for my customer to install their chips.

Take your time. It's not a race. Make absolute sure all pins are lined up and the chip is level before pushing straight down.

I do this process you outlined already (use a chip puller, not a screw driver).  I will try adding some contact cleaner for lubricant, I have some CRC that is for electrical and I use it on the hopper plug and it works great - protects and lubricates...

anyway, I bought the ZIF sockets but the pins are too wide to go into the socket properly, neither the 502 or the 1270 boards will take them - FAIL... looks like I'd have to build something using a breadboard if I want that to work, I will search for "round pins" instead of the flat ones, maybe I can find something
