Author Topic: igt s2000 not booting correctly or spinning- lights on and wheels locked (Read 551 times)

Hi all,

This is my first post here and I am very unfamiliar with these machine, so apologies if I'm missing something simple. I have an s2000 that I have been using for part of a sculpture piece. I do not need the machine to function, just to turn on and automatically spin before power cycling.
It has been working for months now with no issue, but I just installed it in a new show and the wheels do not spin. The machine turns on, lights work, wheels are locked in place with the motors. I noticed that the bottom led on the motherboard flashes red and the 4th flashes orange, so I'm assuming this is an issue with booting correctly.

Can anyone help me identify the problem? I'm really in a bind here and need this thing to spin. I will post as many photos as I can. Here is the machine interior and the boards. I see no corrosion or other issues on the boards

It looks like a Varta battery problem. It needs to be removed and the board modified. Try leaving it powered up for an hour, then shut it off and turn it back on.

Thank you. I will leave it on for a while and try that. I was reading other threads about Varta battery issues earlier- this is solved by desoldering the battery and removing the U16 regulator? Apologies for my ignorance, but can you tell me what this fix corrects? thanks!

Yes. Remove the Varta and U16. If that doesn't work you will need to get the board repaired, or replace it.

The Varta battery powers some security circuits only of use to the casino and not needed for home use. On this enhanced 1270 board, If the Varta battery gets low or goes dead it can prevent the machine from booting (Netplex Link Down). On all boards, the Varta battery is prone to leaking. Its not a matter of if, but just a matter of when. When it leaks it usually destroys the board. It is recommended to always remove the Varta .

So I removed the Varta battery and U16, but no improvement. The first time I turned the machine on after installing the board I got a different sequence of LEDs with nothing flashing or red (pictured below), but the wheels do not spin. Turning it off and on reverted to the original LED sequence with flashing red light. It seems like if I raise and lower the door mechanism multiple times I can get it back to the sequence pictured.

Is there anything else I can check as far as pins, connections, etc, or does anything on this board appear broken? Or do I need to look into professional repair or replacement at this point?

The wheels are still primed to spin, and there is a signal to their motors. Lights are working as well

You can check for bent pin(s) on MPU going to backplane. You probably need to send board to member lookes for repair. Your legacy board is also missing the sound simm. Also, they are called reels not wheels. lol

Apologies, I know very little about these machines. Reels it is. I got this machine from a prop recycling warehouse to use in a kinetic sculpture, and the only functionality I need is the initial spin when the machine boots up.

I've checked pins going to the backplane. Is there any other spot between there and the psu I should check? Not having sound is fine for my use. Thank you for the info

You realize that there's no belly glass in that machine...just a fluorescent light? lol
The chip on the MPU you showed us is for a game called "Triple Double Stars".

From what you're saying, you only want to see the reels spin like when the machine boots up?
To achieve that, try this.
With the power off, move some of the reels manually with your fingertips...up or down...like mixing them up.
Now, turn on the power switch and close the door.

It probably won't work tho because there's nothing in your reel glass display panels in the photo of your machine ON.
Looking at your 1st photo, it appears that the reel glass display panels don't have anything plugged into them.
Could you show us a good photo of the back of those reel glass displays.

Finally, do you know anyone near you that is electronically inclined, and owns a digital multimeter that can check voltages?

Yup, I'm aware. I've wired in a motion sensor so it activates when people approach.

Oh cool, good to know what the original game is. When I got the machine the reels were flaming skulls and both the top and bottom sections were gutted. I made custom icons (not sure what the proper terminology is) for the reels, mounted a custom screen and media player in the top, and left the bottom bulb exposed.

I understand that some of the choices might seem silly to gaming machine enthusiasts/hobbyists/pros, but I'm just an artist who's trying to get his salvaged machine working again

Does it actually spin and play, or does it just power up and do a maiden spin? I think it's cool! What would you like it to do?

Currently it just powers up and does a maiden spin (thank you for the terminology!), because it's showing at a gallery and a fair and insurance won't cover an interactive piece. So I've built a timed circuit that power cycles the machine every 10 minutes or so.

It would be awesome to get the game fully working eventually, but for now I would be happy with the maiden spin. Another member mentioned that you do repairs on these boards. Do you think that this is a board issue or is it possibly something else with the wiring? I haven't adjusted anything between the gallery show and the art fair, but it's possible something shifted during transit. I don't see any loose connections

oh! ok!
It must be your power supply unit (PSU) up on the back wall - behind where the reels are supposed to be.
These machines are made to be ON 24/7....but you're turning it OFF/ON every 10 minutes, surely must have killed the PSU?

I see. Definitely possible. There is power going to the board/lights/reel motors though

I tried moving the reels with the machine off and got no change. The machine was turning on and spinning on startup for 2 weeks when I had it installed a week ago, but since I moved it I can't get it to work.

I've attached a photo, let me know if this is what you meant. I wouldn't say I'm electrically inclined but I do have a multimeter I can use, but not until tomorrow morning

It could be the power supply behind the reels. I would suspect the MPU board tho. Yes I do repair them.

Once you get it working again with Lookes help, I know of a way to let your machine play on it's own and by itself continously.
We need to see the back of your reel glass display panels and the connectors that are hanging.

I'm getting a 500 error when I try to reply with a photo. That would be incredibly helpful, thank you. Is it possible to eliminate the psu as the issue before repairing the board? what should I be checking with the multimeter

Yes...your machine is missing a few pieces.
There's suppose to be an inside door panel that holds the I/O boards that are resting on the reel shelf.
Also, there's supposed to be a small VFD driver circuit board, like in the photo below, that powers up the blue VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) on the reel glass...that's important.
It would be connected with a small black plastic connector and the red/black 2-pin wiring harness.
Also needed is a flat multi-colored ribbon cable that runs between them.
In your photo, the VFD is the one with the red caution on the back of it.
