From an advanced technical perspective it is my experience that computer chips work on smoke.
When the smoke leaves the chip they no longer work and it’s extremely difficult to put it back in.

Yep watch what direction the chips are inserted.

Something important that I learned about the chip, again I am a NOVICE and the chips have a notch on one of the ends, this is extremely important to pull the old chip and know where the notch is located. If not then you will have a O s**** on your hands.

Joe,

As shown on the base glass, the machine came from the Sundance West casino originally located on Fremont Street. From what I've found online, it closed in 1980.

Yes, the handle can be pulled at any time including with power off. I've attached a couple pics of the inside mechanism. Please let me know if you would like additional pics. I wish I could get ahold of someone with a similar machine to compare the mechanism to confirm that a lock-out is missing. Going through the nlg archives, I did find someone (neonkiss) that actually has a similar machine so I emailed him directly. However, it appears that [he] hasn't been active since January of 2024 and hasn't responded.

Thanks again, Lance

I learned a lot today!
I was ready to start the clear chip, however it didn't fit, I contacted Alan with K-LAR and explained the problem. I am a NOVICE so I am passing on my learned experience from this issue. I learned that the prongs were out like spider legs, and I figured out if I put them on a flat piece of Formica with even pressure all of them will bend equally. That was the ticket, after I was really, really careful with the fit making sure that it was aligned then I pushed it all the way down.
Then I was ready to clear the MPU.
Being a NOVICE I had to figure it out, the directions said how to clear it, however it didn't work, so I pulled down the arm and holy s*** it changed the screen, cleared everything, and I was in business.
So, this is what I have learned from clearing the MPU.

The two diodes D4 & D5 are silicon switching diodes, number 1S1588. They can be found on eBay but obsoleted at most electronics suppliers. An acceptable alternative is the 1N4148.

As far as checking the continuity of all the circuit traces, doing so will test your patience. Each one of the traces from the CPU (Z80) to the Eproms and RAM all have to be rung out. Yesterday I started working on the same board you have with similar symptoms and so far have found three open traces on the bottom side of the board, just below the battery. Appear to be from a combination of weak solder joints, battery acid, heat and old age. The solder joints have been repaired and the board now boots to the Error 12, same as yours. The Eproms and RAM tested good, battery circuit's good so I suspect there's a problem with the memory decoder chip (74LS139) or related chips as the system rom is loading but the game rom is not. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

So although replacing the switching diode may alleviate one problem there still may be an issue with the ROM or RAM loading. Try the diode first to see if that restores play.  PM me your email address and I'll send the information to check the traces.
