Bally payout meter not working properly
« on: May 16, 2019, 05:21:32 PM »
Me Again, well I finally got the digital win meter from Klar and installed it, the coin payout is perfect but the meter is counting two or more counts per coin out...I took off the black wire #4 count wire and touched the #2  (yellow wire that goes to the light socket )with #4 on the meter and it still counts in twos, any ideas? again Thank you for your help...

Schematic for the count up and reset attached.
If there is a coin out meter in the machine, most likely mounted under the reels.
Check to see if its working, if so compare the count to the payout.
In most cases both counters are tied to the same circuit.

Hi, There is nothing at all behind the reels in fact the only circuit I see is behind the hopper and that looks like a power supply board, very strange machine.....up at the very top behind the glass are two wheels with solenoids attached, the one wheel on the right has the numbers 1 thru 9.....I will post photos shortly....

Coin count meters are located in sight, most of the time they’re in the reel mechanism.
Back in the day a Casino crew would open the machine, record the coin in and coin out meter numbers. Open the cabinet below, remove the coin drop box for accounting in a secure room.

After machines leave a Casino there is not much use for meters, but it’s nice to get a machine that has counters that still work. Most of the time they have stopped working. Inside the older meters as seen in the photo. There is a weak spot in the linkage that breaks from repeated stressing.

On this form there is a posting of a meter I rebuilt.

Hello, ok I found two meters on the front below the reels, I wrote down the numbers on the meters and played the machine till I hit, I won 10 coins, the one reel meters last three digits read 852, after I won the meter read 869, difference of 17, then I looked at the win meter and it read 27,IF I subtract 27 from 17 I get 10 and that's how many coins I got out of the machine...hope this makes sense ...so now Im really confused lol...

When the machine pays out 10 coins the payout meter should advance by10 if the meter is working properly.
The win meter should do the same.
Trace the wire that advances the payout meter back to its source. This would be a set of contacts most likely activated by the coin roller pivot arm on the top of the hopper or contacts on the payout step up unit. Once the suspected contacts are located a positive proof needs to be made. This is done by insulting the contacts with a piece of paper or thin plastic.
This needs to be secured in place as to be able to play the machine until it pays out. There should be no reading on either meter. Once this is accomplished the contacts may need to be adjusted as they may be to close, causing a bounce or double reading.

Machines can be set to pay by stopping the clock fan, setting and holding reels in a payout position.
Release the clock fan while holding the reels until the machine cycle finishes.

This schematic should help locate the switch that pulses the win meter.

Pardon the finger scratch for writing.

Hi DavidLee just a quick update, it will take me a while to go thru everything but so far using your directions I found that the payout meter under the reels was malfunctioning so I removed it and replaced it with the one next to it which I believe was used by the casinos and now, the payout meter (pardon the pun)  is right on the money..

Okay, good deduction to eliminate certain functions. This is a good indication the pulse contacts are working as they should. At this point I would remove the count up wire on the door win meter. From that terminal jump a wire to the coin count meter wire that you have working now. Do this to test the win meter for accuracy. It should count up the same if working properly. The results should provide some direction.

Great advise!! I checked the win meter as you have said and when I crossed the count wire with the number 1 wire it would still count in 2's so this led me to believe there was a problem with the win meter, I took it apart and noticed there was a 100 uf 16 volt capacitor that crossed over one of the chips...In my past experience these caps are known to go bad without any signs so I changed it and guess what, it works perfectly now,
its like a new machine! I cannot thank you enough DavidLee for all the information and guidance you have given me to get this far since I had no idea where to start or what to look for.., you are truly the best!!! Thank you!!!

Quincy, glad you got the counter working.
Don't think I've would of found the bad capacitor like you did.
I have more experience with the EM type equipment than low voltage electronics.
But that's good to know as I might come across the same problem some day.

There is a person that had 10 or so boards made for the j400.
Most likely in a earlier post you might find his name and contact number.
