wrt to the grease, it's pretty much clean off the old stuff and put on new.
personally, I use stuff like "tri-flow" lube with ptfe on things like the reels, shafts and clock gears rather than grease or oil, and just use grease where metal pieces slam or slide against each other.
if you flip down the tabs holding in the reel shaft, you can remove the entire shaft and reels and take the shaft apart to clean.
with the reels out, you can access all the linkages under the reels and usually clean/lube without taking any of that stuff apart. Spray carb/brake cleaner is pretty handy.

the schematic for the 1046 I don't have, but I do have other paperwork which I'll post. I do have a schematic for the 1045, which I'll clean up and put on the web site. The 1045 is a 3-line game, while the 1046 is 5-line, so the line unit will be different.
The 1046 is similar to the 873-ZZM, so I will post the paperwork for that also. There may be differences in things like jackpot bells, light towers and most obviously the plug connections ... the 873 used jones plugs everywhere and the 1046 jones plugs + molex plugs ... but if you take the reel/payout counter part of the 873 schem and the rest of the 1045 schem, you'd probably be close to the 1046.
until you find a 1046 schem,
