Small issues with 809-zt

Got another EM last night.  Super clean inside, just a few small issues-


3rd reel stop is slow to engage.  I switched it to different posts, but this did not seem to make a difference.  I haven’t cleaned it yet, but it looks well maintained.  Spring looks a little wanky,  so I stitched it with another reel,  but still engages a 10 seconds late.


The coin return button pulls out.  How is this supposed to be fastened in the machine.  It does push down properly.


Missing the cap for the candle.  Any thoughts on a source for this?  I looked on eBay and a few websites, but nothing promising.

There was an ugly casino/home made looking plate on the metal below the reels.  I started cleaning this.  Shame the glue rusted the chrome a bit.

the coin return was button is held on by a "snap washer" according to the parts manual.


below is a pic of an assembly of an E series game I swiped from ebay.  That's an E-clip, which would work fine.  Any sort of retaining clip that fits into the groove would work ... take the button to a hardware store that has a bunch of the drawers of parts and pick something that fits and doesn't have a huge outside diameter to avoid possibly hitting part of the door.


if reel 3 isn't latching, you've got an issue with the timer link.  Could be crud preventing the link from moving all the way, could be the entire shaft is gummy and stalling, the piece on the shaft that moves link 3 is sticking or something is preventing the shaft from rotating far enough - sticky clock, the timer link attached to the clock is getting stalled by too much switch pressure, etc.

My 956 has one of those casino made signs glued to the door; my wife says it's ugly.  I agree that the sign isn't attractive especially since the game has very nice MGM glass in it.  I am not planning on removing it though as that is how it was when it was operated at the MGM. 


I have another machine (from the Reno Hilton) that has a label on it offering a $5 reward for info leading to conviction of people inserting slugs.  The machine was manufactured in 1979 so the $5 reward seems pretty insignificant even for then.


The paint within the ribs of the door generally don't look too good on these machines.  Has anybody ever tried to restore the paint on these doors?

I just spray the ribbed area on the reel glass frame with a matching gold paint. I would think that it is next to impossible to paint the gold color in the valleys of the ribs.

Try cleaning the wiper board and guide slot on the 3rd reel. Also all the mechanism related to the 3rd reel.
I would suspect the assembly levers below the 3rd reel need cleaning.

Bushings and levers riding on the shafts below the reels should move freely.
Even the smaller shafts should rotate without much force.


Service button is held in by a C E or snap ring.


It’s possible to remove all the gold paint from that portion of the reel glass bezel.
It will look okay, but a new coat of the right color gold would look nice and original.
For the best results the groves should be completely clean.
Mask off the area then bag the rest of the machine.
After the paint dries to where it can’t be disturbed, wiper the chrome ribs with a thinner.

I got the third reel stop working correctly- just needed gunk removal


Thanks for the advice.  Rib area came out pretty nice.  Some pitting where the glue created rust.






Still can’t find the tower light cap.  Considering trying a 3-d printer to make one, but don't have the specs.


Anyone know a source for these things?

to get to the coin entry and return button, I think the front chrome glass frame is held on by four screws from the back.


the two top ones are pretty obvious as there's nothing else up there besides a light.  The bottom left screw is just to the left of the top/left corner of the coin mech bracket, and the bottom right screw is similarly spaced.


there's a few screws on the bottom that are going thru tab-like extensions of the lower internal door casting.  You don't want to remove those screws ... they connect the lower and upper door castings together.  The screws you want only go thru the upper door casting.

Try eBay for the top light.


Most machines like that had a square chrome tube with rounded edges.
Any where from 4 to 8 inches tall with a square chrome base.
On top of that was the light cover made of plastic.
Most were red or yellow.
