Please excuse my newbie-ness but this is my first bb1.  The batteries on this unit were completely dead. The terminals were also broken off on the board from somebody else's attempt to replace it. I soldered on some new wire leads and attached two new battery holders. After putting on the new batteries, I ran the ram clear following a YouTube video. That seem to work totally fine. Then I installed the original game back in and I'm now stuck at the screen you see I've attached to this post. Pressing the diagnostic switch does not seem to do anything. What am I missing?

You will need to use a clear card to clear and set up the game.

Hmmm I did that with this card.  Is the clear and setup you're referring to something different?

In that case you have cleared it.  It just needs to be set up.  If you go to YouTube and search for bluebird clear, you should find a nice video by Jim from bettor slots that will walk you through the entire process.

It appears that it's been cleared.

If I read your post correctly, you stated that the Diagnostic Test Button does nothing when pressed.

If that's the case, your door switch could be sticking and the machine thinks that the door is closed. That will disable the circuit and prevent you from getting into the operator menu.

Check there first, pull out on the bar that actuates the switch and see what happens. I believe the bar is located above the Bill Validator, at least it is on the BB2.

All the door switches seem to be open as he has the open door messages on the bottom left side of the screen.  The fact that he has almost all doors open, I would look to make sure everything is connected into the backplane.  The diagnostic button harness may not even be plugged in.

Good catch, Rick.

Didn't even notice the messages on the screen.

Thanks for the responses guys!    Really appreciate it.  I think you're right about the door switches Rick.  Inside I found some loose wires that look like they should be attached to the diagnostic button.   Not sure which order these go on.  Going to peruse the manual....

There are always loose connectors on these machines as part of stuff the casino removed before it sold the machine.  You need to look at the connectors on the backplane.  Your screenshots show that pretty much all your switches are open, which is VERY unusual for this type of machine.  You need to make sure the molex connectors on your backplane are making good contact.

Sorry been away from the machine lately.  I took some more pics of the inside of the unit.  Hard to get a good shot with all the cables inside.  Does anyone familiar with this kind of machine see any obvious missing connections?

When you refer to backplane, do you mean the connections in the third photo I just uploaded?  The connections hidden behind that mess of wires.

Yes, that is the backplane.  The keyswitches plug into the J10 labeled door switches.  You need to trace the wires to the switches and verify connectivity.  If you have connectivity all the way to the connector with no issues, then replacing the backplane is your next step.  If that doesn't fix it, then the MPU is last (in order of least to most cost).

The diagnostic button only needs two wires, in my cabinet it's a green wire with a brown stripe and ground (black with light grey stripe).

So I flipped through that monster of a manual and found out some information.  The door codes in the bottom each represent a different door switch. The front door belly switch when depressed would toggle the B letter.  SO I just need to figure out why LMDSP are all open when they likely shouldn't be.  The manual details what each code stands for but the blow out diagrams are really hard to read.  It would be nice to have schematics so I could do some continuity testing on the J10 pinnout you mentioned.  Couldn't find any easily.   It sound like my diag switch matches yours.  I followed the two wires back to J10 and confirmed connection.  The green (brown) wire goes to pin 14 on J10 and the Black (grey) wire goes to pin 22 on J10.

I then went to the main door switch (looks like a double throw) and tried getting continuity from that back to the backplane and right off the hop struggled to find the Red(purple) wire.

My wires on that switch went in this order from top to bottom:
1.) Grey (Purple)
2.) Grey
3.) Red (purple)
4.) Black
5.) Black (green)
6.) Black (gray)

The wire I tried tracing was the red (purple) one coz I thought it would be easier to spot from the rest.  Couldn't see it at all on the J10 connector.

Rickhunter - would you be the most amazing planet on earth and tell me the wire color order on your main door switch?  Would be nice to know first off if they were in the correct order.  I have no idea what the previous person did in here as it was a blind sale and was sold not working.  I'm so close to getting it work I can taste it....

I think all those share a common ground wire...

Here are what I believe the pinouts to be for the backplane jumper that controls that stuff.  Send them to ground and see if they 'clear' ?

J10 on the backplane
pin 1   -   Belly Door
pin 2   -   Bill Validator
pin 3   -   Drop Droop
pin 4   -   Logic Door
pin 5   -   Main Door
pin 6   -   Stacker Switch
pin 7   -   Top Box Logic Switch
pin 8   -   Top Box Main Door
pin 9   -   Reset Key
pin 10 -   Diagnostic Key

I am not sure which pin is ground, though.  hahaha   Pin 11 and 12, or 23 and 24 ??

Huge day guys,

I ripped out everthing, resoldered the backboard, fiber glass cleaned all the switches and nothing changed.  heart broken.  With the towel in my hand ready to throw, i tried one last ram clear and suddenly everything started working!!!!!!!!!

i was able to get rid of all of those door errors, and enter the diagnostic mode like the youtube videos show.
Now this machine will be setup for home use here in Canada.  I setup the serial number, devices: no printer, no comparator, hopper (not sure which part that is but i set it to bluebird compatible) and the bill validator to JCm BIll val and it seems to make some whirring noises so hopefully that's working.  Setup the date and time and some denomination settings.  Hit save and exit to game and it booted to the bloody game!  Now the thing that confuses me is that it still says "restart" bottom middle and closureM in the bottom right.   I played with some door switches at it seems that the bottom right is like a history of what was done last.  Toggling the switches will cycle the appropriate letter in the bottom left of the screen.  The word restart never goes away whether in call attendant screen or in game.
Unfortunately I don't have any american bills to test with at this time but going to try next week.  I also noticed a light is outu on the mainboard.  see pics...  Does any one have any insight at this point if the game is ready and playable?

Thanks for the help!!

Closure M means the main door was closed and restart means that the game was restarted.  The messages will go away when you play the first game.  You already have the game screen up, so the game should be playable once you insert credits.  If you don't want to have US bills laying around, I recommend you get a TITO board that has the credits option enabled. This way you would just push the service button to get credits into the machine, no more bills necessary.  It will also allow you to print and re-use the tickets you print as many times as you want to insert credits into the machine.
