Hopper Issue Bally 1034
« on: July 26, 2016, 05:10:54 PM »
I recently acquired a Bally 1034 from an estate sale. It has had it's share of issues. But, it was up and running pretty quickly. But, now it seems to have an issue with the hopper. When it pays it spits out a few coins then pauses briefly like it has a jam (you can hear a hum). However, you can freely spin the pinwheel. When it does this "stop pay". If you remove the hopper and slide it back in it will then continue to pay (may have to do this once or twice).

After the pay is complete with proper number of coins. All lights come on and works properly. Now, when you play the next game you will hear the payout solenoid chatter for a couple of seconds. After the first game is played it will not no longer chatter until the next payout. Then it starts over again.

I guess one question I have is: What is the purpose of the 30uf capacitor located on the hopper?

The capacitor and the resistor on the payout relay are there can stop flashback Ark
As far as the motor not running and the pinwheel being free I would expect a lack of 120 volts to the motor
To confirm this put a set of jumper wires from the motor to a meter plug the hopper and see if there's no 120 volts there went glitches out follow back to the payout relate contacts Maybe dirty from the payout relate I would look at the contacts on the plug on the back of the hopper they could be dirty

If you have a motor brake instead of an over-ride solenoid, check that to see if it pulls in without binding.
Motor brake is a little flap on a hinge and spring under the motor.  Over-ride is a 120V solenoid on top of the hopper, which pulls in a slicey knife like thingy.
And yes, clean your payout relay switches, lightly but politely.

Try this low tech technique.
As the hopper is paying out, grab it near the front latches and give it a push in, out, left, and right simultaneously.
Try this with the latches up.
Had a machine that wouldn't pay out everytime and it was just a bad connection at the beau plug.

Have you checked the contacts on the jackpot relay on the hopper? You could have a set of contacts not making good contact.. What happens too is that the plastic insulator at the end of the contact wear or can even melt from the heat of the payouts contact. This causes the contact to loose the connection.. So look over your hoppers jackpot relays closely.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

Ok. I finally got a chance to play with this today.

So, I wanted to do a follow up. After reading through the comments I thought what the heck. I'll pull the hopper and re-check all the contacts which I had already cleaned. It' been 25 years since, I had played with one of these Bally EM's maybe, I missed something. All looked good. Placed hopper back in and played the game until it would pay and hang up. I then listened for the "Hum" which I tracked back to the reset relay/coil up in the odds unit. A slight touch and it would release and start to pay then hang up again on larger payouts.

Bottom line. The solution was to put a piece of electrical tape on the metal plate opposing coil. She runs just fine now.... Thanks for all of your inputs.
