Help identifying this machine, and payout problem
« on: December 10, 2018, 10:09:22 AM »
I am working on my father in laws slot machine, and though I've repaired juke boxes, I've never worked on a slot. The machine does not pay out.I'm looking for assistance with this problem as well as help identifying it, and a recommendation for a good service manual.
Thanks
Alan

It's a Bally 809 - a very common machine, and "Electro-mechanical" or EM machine. There are plenty of experts here that will be able to help you out.
For starters, does it accept coins and cycle/spin and stop?

Thanks!
How do I become a contributing member?
That said, My father in law is out of town, and I'm waiting to find out where he hid the key for the unit.
In the mean time, (it has been a while since i messed with it) the coins just drop right though.  I don't remember that being the problem, but it could be.  It may have a couple of problems.
Thanks again.

Alan

ok, so I got the key and got into it again...after re seating a few things, I got it to accept coins and even pay off.
So now what I am left with, is that it sometimes trips the internal breaker when a coin is inserted, or when the handle is pulled...this is intermitenet.Additionally, the counter up above does not always agree with the number of coins put in. sometimes it will even go backwards as you add coins.
Thanks for your help
Alan

The meter problem just sounds like the meter it’s self is just worn out. Now you say it trips a breaker inside? Can you post a picture.. These machines usually had fuses. If you Game is popping the breaker when a coins played or the handles pulled, it sounds like you can a wire grounded out or has a wire that’s rubbing on something moving. Look at the wires on the coin accepted and insert coin light sockets. Make sure nothing grounding out. Also check the coin switch wires. If your other issues come back, your going to want the clean the beau plugs on the hopper and reels. These are the plugs that connect the reels and hopper to the cabinet wiring. They tend to tarnish and loose the connection. A good electrical contact cleaner helps, a scotch bright pad or a small wire brush works too.
