Buzzing "Accept Coin" deflector - How to quiet it?
« on: November 24, 2014, 09:26:03 PM »
I've been doing some digging looking for ideas on how to quiet a buzzing "Accepting Coin" deflector solenoid.  I've tried to clean it of debris, but it buzzes badly sometimes.

Have you looked at replacing the solenoid?

Solenoids that buzz happen a lot on pinball equipment. People try all kinds of things messing with the problem, like adjusting the spring, reversing the armature (flat metal flapper) etc but they still usually end up replacing it. Sometimes over the years the metal parts in the solenoid get some residual magnetism in them and that interferes enough to cause the buzz. If you can find one and it isn't too costly I'd just replace it and be done.

I got frustrated with the buzzing, so I eliminated it and took it out of the equation. End of buzzing problem:

Ramegoom, I saw your post for the 2nd deflector for putting coins in the hopper, the one I'm dealing with is on the front side of the coin accept.  My unit pulls this in until 5 coins or the arm is pulled.

I took it apart and cleaned it some more and tried to make sure it traps flat when energized.  It's a bit better, but will have to work with it some more.

The one behind the coin acceptor...

I am wondering whether it would be possible to convert that relay to DC. You would need a diode, resistor and capacitor, but if that worked, you could eliminate the AC component.

You would need to limit current to it with a resistor, since an AC coil operating on DC would consume probably four times the current and burn up. The capacitor would filter the DC, resulting in a clean noiseless operation.

Something to consider anyway.

You can take out that mechanical coin mech and install a CC-16D comparitor. You will use the 50 volt orange wires that are connected to  that noisy coil. Connect the orange wires to the comparitor, 3rd pin  down (50 Volt connection) and bottom pin and your good to go. You can see in ramegoom pic the red and black wires on his comparitor.

Interesting idea,  I went and read a bit, looks like the CC-16D comparitor runs in 25cent and up, can I put a nickel in it?   The manufactures web site was not specific in the public section.
