A few quick AVP questions.
« on: November 16, 2018, 04:59:05 PM »
Looking at picking up an AVP shortly.

The AVP’s are all Greek to me, been a WMS BB1/BB2 fan for some time.

What will I need to start?  I have ekeys 3,4 and 5 coming shortly.

What about a diagnostic ekey?  014-09?

Should I look for an ekey 7, are there any dealers here that might have one?

Is there anything on the AVP platform to stay away from?

Any or all comments welcome!

Thanks.

Ekey 7 is the universal Ekey, works for all functions that need to be "Ekeyed".  Ekey 3, 4, and 5 do the exact same thing, you just need to know when to use 3, 4, or 5.  If you start with 3, 4,  and 5 and get used to using them at the proper times, then ekey 7 only becomes a convenience to you since you use it for everything.  But if you already have 3, 4, and 5 coming in, you might as well get used to that and save the funds for something else.

You will need a diagnostic key in order to perform certain function like wiping non-volatile storage.  Almost everything else in the diagnostic key are just that, diagnostics.  The only thing I use it for is to wipe non-volatile storage, and since I screw around with configurations all the time, it is quite useful for me.  It is not that expensive and worth having.  Although if you buy the machine fully working, you may never need it at all if you just want to play the machine.

I am assuming you are picking up a video AVP and not a stepper.  If my assumption is correct:

1.  Get at least a 3.0M mpu (this has a dual core processor, the 3.0 only has single core).
2.  Get a cabinet with an MLD monitor, if you don't, getting one later might be difficult and expensive. (Try to get a G20 or a G23 cabinet, easier to work with)
3.  Get new batteries before you start configuring things.
4.  If you do get an MLD monitor, make sure the cooling fans work, if they don't work right, replace them with new ones.
5.  Get a machine with Dynamic buttons, if you can get one with the edgelit ones, better, it sure makes the games more enjoyable.

Rick, have you replaced the fans in the MLD monitor?  Any idea what size they are?  did you remove the monitor to do this?

Thanks!

I just bought the exact same replacement from digikey.

https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/delta-electronics/EFB0612HHA/603-1026-ND/1014357

Yes you have to remove the monitor from the cabinet.  Then the back cover comes off after removing the little round head Phillips screws, it just lifts off and you see the fans.  The fans I bought were not terminated (bare wires) so I basically clipped the wires from the old fan and left the connectors as they were, just used some heat shrink tubing after soldering the wires together.  Took me about 1 hour to do the whole thing.  I also took the opportunity to clean the interior of the touch screen as it was full of gunk.  Monitor looks and "sounds" new now.

Thank you!  Exactly what I was looking for, I'm going to order 4 of the fans and replace them all.  They are pretty darn noisy right now.

So the monitor fans are 12V?

For your info there are actually 6 fans used in this monitor.  I had to replace all 6 in the AVPs I had here.  The outer fans are easy to get to but the 3 blower fans inside require you to dissemble the monitor more which is not difficult but is time consuming.  Extreme care is needed in taking the monitor completely apart.  Short Doc on removal is attached.
