Stinky Machine
« on: December 31, 2021, 10:45:31 AM »
Any tips on getting the funky smells out of my G20? I’ve tried a lot of things but the stink still sticks around.

The big three smells from a slot....
Tobacco smoke which is topical (on the surface).
Then comes bacteria - generally from soda and similar drinks being spilt into or on the machine.
Finally Mold which comes from moisture - most likely from the drinks mixed with all of the above.

I suggest stripping your machine of everything you can, get a supersized roll of paper towels and wiping all the surfaces with Mr. Clean (or similar degreaser) this will help remove the tobacco layer.
Next I would use a spray bottle with Vinegar perhaps mixed with water. This will get into all the seams and corners that you didn't get to and its good for killing mold.
Also treat the outside of your machine as this is what was exposed to the casino environment.

Finally on the inside I would use Killz which is a restoration primer. The professionals use this on fire and water damaged homes. Covers anything that smells.

Its also available as a spray but depending on what you took out (or more importantly didn't take out) of your machine you may want to put it on by brush.

Just remember that your glass needs to be washed with water and only a very mild detergent, same with reel strips, all of which can easily be layerd with tobacco and stink (Both sides).

The cooling fans will have a lot of smoke and dust buildup in them.  Take out the fans and the intake screens and clean them.

I have one S2000 that I tried baking soda to de-stink it. Didn't work. After 4 years, I finally totally stripped the machine and used a powerful ammonia based cleaner on the entire inside of the cabinet. I replaced the fan, and cleaned every part I could clean. (always staining the shop towels brown) Put it back together, and it still stinks after warming up... I've had it for 6 years now.
Anymore I just figure it adds to the 'ambiance' of a home casino lol...

Thanks everyone. I think it is mold and roach stench. It had a few roaches in it when I got it. Alive of course 🤮. Killed them but ammonia and Kilz sound like the next step. lol

Just remember Ammonia and Bleach = Chlorine Gas = Death.
Just be very careful that you don't mix Ammonia with any other cleaning product.

The perfect murder.
Alone in a locked room (bathroom).
Ammonia in the bowl, Bleach in the tank.
One Flush, Evidence down the drain....

I do this sort of thing.
Wash any piece that's removable, I've washed logic trays to reel shelves in parts washers then sink rinse. Fan's are obvious candidates for thorough clean or replace. Windex the inside surfaces while parts are out. Mildew, and mold can build up on bottom boards. Bleach and paint them if going to the trouble of dealing with a base board.
In short I've polished some real turds out there, into something better.

Oh and leaf blowers can blow stinky dust out of components like power supplies that you may not want to tear all the way down, yet aren't suitable for full shop air hose pressure.

I had a Bally machine that had a lingering cigarette smoke smell.  I bought some air purifying bags off Amazon, put them inside the machine, and after a month the smell was gone and has not come back.
