Curious, why the difference between the 500 boards and the enhanced board.  I would think they would work equally well?

It probably don't matter whether you use 598 or 363 in a 50x board
My thinking is that a 50x board having a set of 598 is less common

50x and 1270 is the last few numbers of the IGT part number.
1270 is an Enhanced MPU it is labeled that way on the board
easy to ID the large coin battery is removable - center towards the front
Your game chips and simm are on a daughter board called a legacy board
Only board capable of using a S2000 Flash Board AKA 'R' board.

50x - x being 1, 2, 4 with a rev letter like 504B 501A etc etc.
Older MPU originally released when the S2000 was called a vision (1998-late 1999)

No you can not interchange boards without swapping out the back plane / motherboard.

Here is a pic of a 504 board. Full part number is 7551504. If your board looks different than this, then it is a 1270 (Enhanced) MPU. Don't let the term Enhanced mislead you though. The boards function the same, just some games require an Enhanced board. Most games do not.

An quick, easy way to tell the difference between the 2 styles of boards is the handle on the tray. The 500 series board shown in the pic has a rigid, fixed handle. An enhanced board has a hinged, floppy handle.

I think it was Roz that told me that all she uses are 598's for 5 reel machines, no matter what the board version.

To futher clarify, the enhanced 1270 board was the last board type used for the S2000.  I exclusively used these on my machines because they have no static sound, unlike the 500 series board.  There's a solution for the 500 series board that involves a resistor in-line on the speaker wires, it basically acts as a filter for the frequencies where the hum occurs.

The first picture is a 50x series board with the multimedia lite daughtercard installed.  Notice there's only 1 simm slot in it, and the eproms and other simms go on the MPU board itself.

The second picture is an enhanced board withe legacy daughtercard installed.  Notice that all eproms and simm go in the daughercard.

Both photos shamelessly lifted off ebay auctions.
