4th of July machine DBV issue
« on: October 21, 2014, 02:32:29 PM »
I recently picked up my first IGT S+ slot. It's a 4th of July, 2-coin quarter machine with an SP342 Type 5 Game chip. It works fine except for an I'm having an issue with the bill validator - a WBA 10/11SS, ID 022/023,V3.34. It will only accept a single $1 bill which registers 4 credits. It will not accept any more bills until the credits read zero. It will also not accept any bill larger than a one even if there are zero credits. I have cleared the ram and used a set chip (015) to reset the validator, but same results.  I have read many posts on this forum describing the procedure to go step through the setup mode. I wanted to check the hopper and credit settings, but when I step through the menus, I only see one setting for option 7 – I believe it was 400 in the winner paid window. I haven't been able to find any info on the SP342 chip, so I'm wondering if I would be better served by replacing it with a SP1271? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried any older, non-colored bills? I do not have the specifics for the v3.34 software, but it may just be that it does not accommodate the newer colored bills (such as the "new" $5, $10, and $20).

are you trying to use new bills?  your software will only accept bills older than 2004 and only face up.  i believe it does accept nextgen 20 and 50 only, but again only face up.

I only used older series bills - small portrait $100 and $20's. I don't think this is the issue because I soon as I put in a single and it gives 4 credits, the DBV light will not come back on and accept any more bills until the credits are zero. So it seems as if $1 is the maximum amount it will accept.

You have such an old SP chip, I would just go ahead and get an sp1271.  It probably has something to do with your credit limit, but I can't find psr for that chip either.

Post a picture of the dip switch settings on your MPU board.

Wouldn't it just cash out the bill if it was over the credit limit?  :Scratch-Head:  Oh, wait, not if it was the BILL limit? Or is that only on S2000?

The S+ will not take a bill if the bill results going over the limit.

But does an S+ have a Bill limit, or it's that the same as the credit limit?

On an ancient SP chip they'd likely be the same.  I agree with Rick earlier in the thread -- just upgrade your SP chip to a newer chip and we'll have documentation for it and also more flexibility with the settings.

Post a picture of the dip switch settings on your MPU board.
Switches 1 and 2 are for max hopper pay. Was set to 300 (1 and 2 off), tried changing it to Programmable (1 and 2 on) but not change. I would think this only applies to number of coins released before requiring hand-pay.
I did an experiment this morning. My brother has an S+ Double Diamond machine with Haywire chip installed - SP1274. I took the entire board out and installed it in mine. My DBV works fine with his board installed. Accepts multiple bills for credit, same $20 and $100's I tried before.
So it appears that that old SP342 has some mystery setting that needs to be changed, but without the PSR for it I'm out of luck. Strange though, because it must worked at one time since it came out of a casino. I'll just pick up a 1271 as recommended.

The hopper setting in the old chips was also your credit limit.  So if it was set to 300, then you should have been able to run up to 300 credits by bills or wins.  I'm curious after you put the other mpu board into the machine, and then put the old one back does it still do the same thing?  If so, there must be something weird about that sp chip.  I would just do as you are planning to do and just get the sp1271 and be done with it.

to check the status of the of the DIP switches, get into the machine diagnostics and go to the third or fourth display in the winner paid window (should be a 5_0 or 5_1  or 5_2 in the window, then toggle to the end of this sub menu, it will display the actual settings of the DIP switches as the CPU is seeing them. you could have a bad switch, even though it physically shows on, electrically it could be off, this test removes all doubt.          Second area to check, test # 7 in the self test menu, it has two settings, the first is the max hopper payout setting , and the second setting is the max bill credit setting, Test # 8 is the max partial payout setting.

Hope this helps

Jim
