reels on s+
« on: June 25, 2023, 10:25:38 AM »
Just got my S+ and it won't start ? The reels spin one row at a time   ( all three at once )  about three times then lock up in the start up cycle ? Any ideas what it could be ? I used a clear chip but it didn't help ? thanks for any help

Could be a bad connection in your reel harness.

Switch reels and see if error follows a specific reel.

I had this problem once.
Open the door and turn OFF the power switch.
Pull out the hopper, set aside.
Pull up on the black knob on the MPU tray...you'll see that it's jammed in there pretty good.
Wiggle the knob side to side as you push up on it...it should release and slide outta there.
Now flip the whole MPU board upside down and look at all the pins under there.
See them all?
Carefully inspect every single one of them.
Make sure they are ALL completely straight.
If any are touching each other or folded over and touching, it causes major problems.
You can straighten any bent pins with a fine pair of needle-nosed pliers or a pair of tweezers with strong fingers. lol

If all the pins are straight...stick a flat screwdriver under the chip body of the "REEL PROM".
Don't pull up on the socket holder....just the chip body.
Work it upwards as flat as posible.
When all of the legs are out of the socket holes, turn over the chip and make sure those legs are straight.
Note how you took off the ReeL PROM chip....you can see an indentation or small circle at one end of the top of the chip body.
That end has to match the end you can see etched down onto the MPU board itself right next to the socket.
You can see that at one end, there's a small square.
That means the chip with the indentation has to face in that direction when re-inserting the chip legs back down into the socket holes.
Take your time, you don't want to fold any legs back underneath the reel chip body when re-installing the chip.

Like I said, take your time....this is a hobby.
I DO have a question for you....does your MPU have a blue volume knob on top of the MPU?

Looking forward to seeing your short video.
I assume you'll upload it to youtube and give us the link to it?

You say sometimes 42 and sometimes 43.  What if you replace reel 1 with reel 2, do you ever get a 41 error?  Reels rarely ever go bad, most of the time it is the reel driver chip on the mpu.  If you do get a 41 error, then you probably have bad reels, if you don't get a 41 error, then you probably have bad reel driver chips.  Provided all the pins on the mpu are good, if you don't get the error 41 you should probably source another mpu to have as a backup while you can still get them.

There are also 5 resistors in the top left hand of the MPU board. The first 3 will likely be slightly charred. Each one corresponds to a reel.
The S+ can technically take 5 reels but more than 3 are very rarely found.

If the error moves with the reel then you have a reel problem (ignore the resistors as a red herring).
IF you move the reel and nothing changes AND If you consistently get a 41 error then you might have a resistor problem.
... then You can change resistor1 (corresponding to 41) with one of the unburned ones (or resistor2 if its a 42, etc).

However if the problem is random then I would defer to Ricks conjecture that its a reel driver chip.

I swapped the reels out same problem , some times code 41, 42 43 so I don't think its all three reels are bad, I swapped the mpu out same thing, swapped the mother board same thing, used different game chips  same thing, I am using the mpu with the volume control not really sure what belongs in there as the game came with both types of boards and the mpu I tried works in a different  game. Like I said the reels roll one line at a time then after about 5 rolls it locks up and comes with a 41, or 42 or 43 code

thanks for the help so far

Pay attention to which reels you are swapping.  If you are getting reel 1 tilt and then move that reel to reel 2 position and then get reel 2 tilt then it's that reel.

So have you cleared the error each time ? If you don’t the error will continue.
Are you sure the reels are not rubbing on anything. I once had a tiny (tiny) piece of scotch tape on the edge of my reel basket and when they spun it must just lightly grazed the glass. They are quite sensitive.
If you unsure just take the strips off the reel baskets and put them aside until the tinkering is done.

The MPU with the volume pot is 10mhz and the 16mhz is the one without.
Both work in any S+ chassis but the game chip is different between the two and the reel chip must be of a certain speed (faster) to work in the 16mhz version.

Now's a good time to tell us what SP GAME PROM chips you're using.
The wrong ones in a 16mHz board makes the reels act wonky such as in the way that you're describing.
Certain SP chips work for certain MPU versions.
I'd also like to see a good close-up of of your reel driver chips on the MPU.
Here's some photos of three different MPU board versions that I have sitting right next to me.
IGT has had these MPU boards made all over the world so at different times during the production of the S+, they used different reel driver chips.
The MPU boards were made in Vegas, Europe and Mexico.

I've circled in red on three different MPU boards the five reel driver chips.
See how different they are?
Some have butterfly heat dispersion wings sticking out of the chips...most versions don't even have a reel driver chip in the [U3] socket.
IGT board designers even changed the chip location assignment numbers sometimes as well.

Click on any mpu version photo below to enlarge if needed...>>>
