! Caution! Not all tokens, even if described the same, are interchangeable. Most any will
work in your IGT because of the generous coin-channel dimensions guarded by a truly
excellent electronic coin comparator made to work with virtually any international coin.
The problem is that the device very accurately compares the "sample" coin you install to
every coin inserted by the player. Thus, mixing tokens can be an extreme irritant because the
the clever electronics can tell the difference between different types, and will happily reject those that
don't match.
Secondly, tokens became so obscenely expensive to make recently no one I know is ordering new ones
made anymore. If you find them, be prepared to pay closed to $0.25 in lots less than thousands. More likely
you will be buying used ones from an amateur who does not know the difference. Most everyone out there thinks a
Pachislo is a slot machine, and tokens are interchangeable. NOT!
So on both points, basic rules are:
1. Buy enough in a single lot to run your machine(s); or be prepared to have two machines running on different tokens.
2. Don't rely on the description, especially when trying to match some you already have. Demand photographs of
both sides,
and be careful of those with Arabic or Asian writing on them. If in doubt, ask for a sample.
Attached is a photo of two examples: The top one is a genuine brass .984 token I bought some years ago. The bottom one is a lot of Fannini tokens I bought recently described as .984. My IGT S-series machines will take either one, but
not both.
The brass ones measure truly .984 Dia x .058 thick and are non-magnetic.
The Fanninis are US Quarter size .95 Dia x .07 thk, and ARE magnetic.
All three weigh 5.5 grams/3/16 oz, same as a quarter.
Neither will work in my machines with mechanical checkers, one because of diameter and the other because they are magnetic.
In such case, you need to either buy the requisite coin mech from the maker, or modify what you have.
I hope this lengthy response is helpful; I discovered the variations painfully, one by one.
As a result, I now use real quarters in all my machines except two: they are within pennies of the price of new tokens, easily available, and never cause a problem.
And boyo, have I got a Piggy Bank setup now
