All Colossal reel titles are dongle based, so be sure you get both, otherwise, you are going to have an expensive CF card just sitting around.

The dongle is a piece of hardware that is used as a protection device to thwart pirating of software. Even if you copy the software it will not run without the dongle being plugged in. A dongle is much harder to copy than software is.

AutoCad and other expensive software used dongles for several years. Back then it was a device that connected to the parallel printer port. It looks like the WMS dongle is in the form of a flashdrive connected to the main board in a WMS slot.

The dongle will also work on any of the USB ports.  The reason WMS sells that little board, is so that you can mount the dongle inside the mpu box locked away.  At home, we don't care if it is exposed, so we just plug it in outside.

Since the flash drive is a little memory board with usb interface where does the protection come from? Is the WMS software on the flash drive impossible to copy off and place onto another flash drive? Not wanting to do this, I don't even have a BB or whatever, just want to understand how it works. I thought the protection feature would be in the little board you plug into system board and then connect the usb drive to it since hardware protection is usually harder to defeat than software protection methods. Bu since it works with just the flash drive alone in any usb port then the protection must be in the flash drive itself.

Must be some type of encrypted file or data on the dongle that the game software looks for. Anyway, I guess that answers Jimise's question.

The USB dongle is not a flash drive. This is the dongle tech WMS uses.  Basically it is part of the game code now.  What happens is that when the software boots up, it tries to make a secure channel connection to the usb dongle key, it expects a certain series of numbers based on an encrypted key.  If the numbers don't match as expected, the game doesn't load up.  The key itself is an encrypted has that can only be retrieved if you know the private key, otherwise it is a challenge/response type thing.  It is a very secure method of protecting software, but as everything in software, it can be defeated, however, the other security measures in the process of booting up the game, makes this more difficult as any software defeating solution would have be done through software, which would invalidate the security hashes in the OS, BIOS, or game CF that WMS uses to make sure the software is un-altered.  There are companies that will duplicate your dongle, but only if you are the copyright owner of the software, or you can prove you have a license that allows you to do it.  This is the product brief, if further curiosity is in your head.

Thanks Rick!
it's getting harder for me to keep up nowadays.

..... There are companies that will duplicate your dongle, but only if you are the copyright owner of the software, or you can prove .....

The only question that comes to mind after reading that
is "Has anyone here had your dongle duplicated?"

I once saw a "Dongle Duplicator" at an adult store. Wonder if it works on WMS software...lol
