Help with a new machine, please
« on: November 23, 2015, 10:34:07 PM »
Hi

I'm new to the forum and am REALLY impressed with the posts I've read.  A lot of knowledge and experience here - thanks.

Now, I am ex-pat American living in New Zealand.  I bought three American style (three reel) IGT machines.  It looks like all I need to do is replace the batteries in two of them to make them go.  The third machine is a puzzle, and I would appreciate any thought or input.

I have seen machines like this sold as S+, but they're very different than the two S+ machines I got with it.  I'm going to need parts and want to make sure that what I get (and ship) will work.  Pictures of the machine are here:  http://www.biznewzealand.com/slots.php

The board that was sitting inside the cabinet doesn't look like it will fit, so that's probably a good place to start.  I also know I'm going to need a hopper as that's missing too.  I'm not fussed about keeping this as a Balloon Bars, in fact I would like to convert it to a Double Diamonds at some point.  What is this???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to NLG!

That machine sort of looks like an S+ but I'm not an IGT expert, just a late-night hobbyist. It has a motherboard that the mpu will plug into, which is the way an S+ does it. I didn't see a place for a bill validator, but I've heard that the early S+ models didn't have them

Also I didn't see any IGT logo marking on the glass, maybe I missed it, or someone replaced the original glass with their own. Does the machine have an idplate on the side, below pull handle area? If so can you post a photo of it? Also, a photo of the board that was sitting in the cabinet that doesn't look like it will fit could be helpful. That photo or another one should show the game software eproms on the mpu, as well as one showing the entire mpu circuit board.

Hi (and thanks for replying)

Pics uploaded.  http://www.biznewzealand.com/slots.php

The machine is definitely an IGT  Like I said I have seen a couple being sold be dealers as S+, but they're not like the S+ machines I have.

The board looks like the S+ boards but I don't think it fits in the slot where it should.

Thanks again

John

You have an early model S+, before they changed it around to include a bill validator within the cabinet.  The MPU board goes on the left side of the machine.  Here is a photo of what it looks like with all the parts in the machine.  The hopper should be the same as the one used in the other machines.

Thanks very much for that.

I had another look at the board and saw that I wasn't lining it up properly.  It DOES fit when you put it in right....

Also thanks for the info about hoppers.  They are readily available and I'll source one.

Next question:  There are two long wire bundles.  One goes to the play meters next to the reels.  The other has an edge connector on it and no obvious place to go.  Any suggestions?  Could well be that that's something else i need to source!

Thanks again

Ah, I see from your picture that there's another board on the back panel.  I'm missing that and assume that's where the other cable bundle goes.  What's the board so i can find one?

Thanks

post photos of the cable bundles that are no plugged in.  I'm not sure you need that board on the back, it may be an interface for the side mounted validator that was on that particular machine.  Where does the other end of the harness with the edge connector go to?  Sometimes, these machines came with extra harnesses that were used for casino back-end connectivity and may not be needed for the machine to run.  I personally do not have the early model S+, only the ones with the validators built in, but there's not much to these.  All wires should be plugged into the backplane.

OK, pic uploaded.

The bundle is as long as the bundle that goes to the meters by the reel assembly.  (I hung it through one of the reel openings for the pic.)

The bundle starts at the far left back with other bundles.

Thanks in advance for your help.

To convert to Double Diamonds hopefully all you need to do is change the 2 eproms on the mpu, one is marked GAME and the other REEL. Then install some new Double Diamond glass. But we'll hear what the IGT experts say about converting it.

I believe the Double Diamond Deluxe is the variation that has the "nudge" feature, many people find it extra fun over the standard DD.

Thanks, that also helps.

I have the Red, White and Blue Deluxe with the nudge feature and would love to have the Deluxe version of Double Diamonds.  I'll try to make this go as it is then try mods!

Thanks again

Can't quite make it out in the photo, but is that Asian (is that the right word to use?) writing on the player buttons and on the lower part of the "Token" sign? Also, on the extreme left side of player button panel it looks like a square shaped opening, what is that?

Yes, and the buttons have been modified and have dual markings as well.  I'll take this back to original and it will look reallu good as the front and body are in good shape.

The upper glass (paytable) shows a couple of progressive jackpot display windows, maybe that cable that isn't connected to anything was connected at one time to the progressive comm electronics box. Have you looked behind the top glass to see what is in the upper part of cabinet?

Yes I have.  Those blank spaces are where the inserts came off.  They don't match and I'll find replacements that match properly.

Thanks

My mistake, not progressive display cutouts, just jackpot inserts.

Where does the other end of the cable you posted end up at.  I don't recognize the connector type, but it sure looks like something a casino would use for backend stuff.  Trace to see where that cable harness ends up at to see if it needs to be connected.

That bundle comes from a left rear corner of the machine. there is a PC board with several connectors on it, and that's where it starts.  I tried to back there to take a pic but it's just plain awkward.

I think I need to put a new battery in it, use one of the hoppers from the other S+ machines I have and try to fire it up.  (Maybe that's a bad choice of words....)  We'll see whether the board works or needs replacing!

You can always use a board from a working S+. Granted the reels and pays won't match...but if it comes to life you'll know where your problem is. Leave the SP and Reel chips in it and put it in. You will have to change trays if you go from a later machine to an earlier model. That's how I've done in the past and you find things out quick.

You may get a 61 error code changing boards, but use the normal way to clear the error. I've changed boards in the past and they took right off. 61 is usually not a problem.

If you are not familiar with the 61 error:  Open the door hold the white test button in on the mpu for a few seconds until you get 61-1 showing. Then shut and latch the door and turn the reset key one time. The machine should reset and the insert coin light come on and be ready to play. Hope it works.
