How do you read the contents of an SB eprom?
With something like this (below) I'd think? They are devices that work with eproms and other memory chips. They are commonly called "eprom burners" or "rom programmers", etc. They will read the contents of the eprom and give you a checksum. The checksum is an identifying number that correlates to the info stored in the eprom. Different contents give different checksums. The checksum is a way to tell what software is stored inside the eprom. A popular checksum method uses 4 digits but there are other methods. Checksum will look like this: BA94
If you display the eprom contents on a computer screen or print it out it will be in a programmers format that is pretty much unreadable to humans without decoding. Will look like this: AA A9 BF C3 0D and continue with thousands of such numbers, depending on the size of the eprom. Sometimes there are english phrases stored in the eprom, like a copyright message or other words that are used by the machine to appear on the game display. But most of the eprom data looks like random numbers, it is the programming "code" that the computer chip uses to operate.
A properly marked eprom will have a label with info about the contents of the eprom, including a checksum. But not everyone does this. See example below.
On some slot machines there is a way for the machine to tell you the id number of the eprom installed in it. It is usually part of the diagnostics or setup, different slot machine do this in a different way. This is so someone standing in front of the machine can verify what software the machine has.
