S Plus Hopper Froze.
« on: March 21, 2018, 08:54:39 PM »
IGT S+.  Recently I tried to burn off credits by cashing out.  It was plunking away and then started to slow down but eventually got to zero.  Tonight I built up the credits to ~1200 can wanted to drain ti down again.   It dropped ~50 coins and then stopped with a 3300 error..  I found two coins doubled up on the knife.  After clearing that it does a normal startup, reels spin and the it apparently goes into payout mode.  It makes a sound like a motor spinning but stops after ~20 seconds with another 3300.

The hopper is/was full.  I can't turn the coin feed wheel by hand and get all kings of black crap on my fingers trying to move the hopper motor by hand.  I guess the next step is to romove the motor and see if it frees the pin wheel but just in case I thought I'd ask if anyone has run into this?

There are a few different things that could cause this. Here's one idea,,,,,

Turn off power to the machine. You can remove the hopper from the machine if you want to make this easier.
Release the hopper motor brake (it is located on the motor) and you should be able to turn the hopper coin wheel by hand counter-clockwise. If it feels like it is binding & hard to turn then make sure there is nothing jammed against the coin wheel. There is a gearbox that connects between the motor and the hopper coin wheel that has grease in it. The grease can get dried out and very thick when it gets old, making it hard for the motor to turn the hopper coin wheel. There was a recent repair discussion about this, you can search the S+ area for it, if I find it I will post the link.

The black crap on your hands is probably from the old rubber coin agitator (star agitator) that mounts in the middle of the coin wheel. They can get gooey after a few decades. You can get a new one and replace it fairly easy.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Problem solved.

I was able to get a better look at things tonight.  I now see how simple the hopper mechanism really is.  Once I found the brake below the motor I was able to see the problem.

The motor was turning but no coins exited to the tray and just fell back into the hopper.  I'm not sure of the correct name of the part but the metal plate that lifts the coins off the wheel and pushes them into the knife was bent and caused the coin jam that also bent the plate that pushes the knife against the coin wheel.  A little "tweaking" of those  two and all is good!   :dancing_2:

In this case the "black crap" was on the brake side of the motor itself and not the rubber center of the coin wheel.
