« on: June 02, 2014, 06:51:58 AM »

 Y1 change from 16 to 10
  Y2 - remove
U49   remove the YM2413  add 28 pin socket with AY38912 sound prom.
SW1 - add bit switch

Depends on what your time is worth. Boards aren't that expensive

The 16 MHZ boards coin up faster.
It is good when loading $20 or more

i thought cowboygames answered it very well. it depends on how you value your time, if you time is worth less to you than the cost of the 10mhz board then yes. also take in effect your soldering skill. i have seen expert solderers with high end equipment burn some of these old boards. so the question is it worth it is really only answerable by yourselfe.

I would not even attempt to modify the board.
You can buy 10mhz boards from most of our vendors for under $40.
The newer 16mhz board does not have a physical volume adjustment. This is controlled by the 16mhz "game chip" software.
The chip sets designed for the 10mhz games don't support options to change the volume. The sound chips are also different. Not sure if the programming in the 10mhz set will work with the other chipset or not.
Then there are crystals that manage the CPU clock speed and I wouldn't be surprized if there wasn't some security checks in the software to ensure that the RNG (Random Number Generator) is working within some known parameters.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Good point Jay. While the physical differences may be something that can be altered to be that of a 10mhz board, the 10mhz chips still may not work.

I'm curious to know if it can be done though. GOS, if you do attempt this, please let us know if you are successful.  :cool_thumb_up:

one of the reasons is if I am correct there are only 2 sp (sp1145 and sp1146) that work on 16mhz boards??
YES I can buy boards YES it is maybe not worthwhile YES I can buy 10mhz boards yada yada yada - I just want to know what would need to be done.

I don't mean to be discouraging but this forum does not focus on electronic re-engineering and we don't make a point of software disassembly / reverse engineering which would likely be necessary. You would likely get more traction by posting both sets of schmetics on a electronics site and make it a challenge to convert one to another.

I'm totally in agreement with Jay on this one. The Two boards may look similar,  but there are also software/firmware differences as well.  :talktothehand:
I highly doubt just swapping hardware components alone would do the trick.
But if you still want to give it a shot ... Your best bet would be to buy a 10 MHz board and examine it closely to see the differences, then try swapping the parts with the 10 MHz board to see if it works.   :propeller:

Let us know how you make out.
