Another Jennings J400 help thread
« on: November 14, 2020, 11:55:18 AM »
I am on the Jennings J400 bandwagon.  So far it's a bumpy ride!

As is typical, battery exploded.  I cleaned it all up when I got it.  Removed all corrosion from the back plane connectors.  Replaced the large ground pad on the logic board that had corroded away.  Did the battery bypass (2 wire version, not the cap version).  Still behaves EXACTLY as it did the day I bought it.

When I turn it on the reel stop servos click each one twice.  Then the front upper reel light and belly light come on.  The only light on the front is Call Attendant.  No coins accepted since it's not ready.  Can't even get it into tilt, because I think it might already be.

Tried internal reset button on the logic board.  Does nothing at all.  Tried reset key.  Nada.  Everything just sits right there.  I've never seen the reels or hopper even hiccup.  Arm release solenoid has never moved..  One time there was a 9 on the LED display, but that was just once.

5, 12, and 24V all test good at the junction plate.  Ground plane on the logic board connects well to all the chip pins as it should (random check to see if the whole board was dead or something.)

I am at a loss.  Should I just assume a bad logic board and try to have it serviced?  Is there ANYTHING else I can try here?

Thanks everyone!

Did you measure and make sure the CMOS chips are now getting 5 Volts?

I did not.  How can I get in there with the board installed?  If I take out the reel cage can I still power up to get the 5V, but be able to measure it from above?

Answered my own question.  I can.

I checked about 5 chips randomly and they are all getting 5V.

I did post a complete set of Jennings schematics in the NLG downloads section, they may be able to help you out.

That would be extremely handy!  It says I don't have access to downloads.  :-(

Thanks to @shortrackskater for his kind help in getting me set up for file access.

@Badbaud:  I do not see the schematics you said you uploaded.  Just the Jennings manual in MUCH nicer detail than elsewhere.  Can you point me to what you uploaded?

Thanks everyone so far.  Really appreciate how great you guys are!

At the back of the manual were schematics. I found an actual, original, 400 manual and had it scanned and posted in the downloads section.

Gotcha.  I was confused since it wasn't under your user name.  I see all the schematics.

This will be time consuming.   Haha

Thank you!

Ya, pull the board out, make scope connections, plug board back in, take reading, pull board out, make different scope connection, plug board back in.... rinse and repeat.
Fortunately I found some extender cards and was able to extend the board half way out which got me access to half the IC's.
I have had to replace a power supply with a SMPS substitute which allowed me to completely remove the transformer.
Also replaced a defective solid state relay with a IGT hopper SSR on one repair.

I'm wondering if it might be worth it to get another board just to ensure nothing else is wrong.  With my pachislo slots I know how to make all the parts work independently to ensure nothing else is wrong, but a 'real' slot machine is new to me (and WAY more expensive).  It just bugs me that my first one is basically DOA.  :-/

Check with Alan (badbaud). He's fair with prices and his stuff is TESTED. He might have a board for you.
And with any older slot machine parts, check around first. Post a WTB here or, better, check with our vendors listed on the home page. There's a few sellers on eBay that are way out of line with pricing, so look around and compare prices. And, if you do buy on Ebay, make sure they offer some sort of guarantee that it's tested/working. There are a few undesirable Ebay sellers out there and most of us know who they are. I've bought plenty of parts for my S plus, S 2000's, and CEI at very reasonable prices.
