An oddball, solved problem from the past DBV-200
« on: October 13, 2014, 03:44:02 PM »
So, I was called upon to figure out what was wrong with a friend's S+. The bill acceptor had been working, but had stopped. No clear or set work had been done, it just quit taking money. Upon power up, the DBV would just grunt a bit, the motors would not run, just repeated grunting that would finally quit with the bezel remaining unlit. I pulled the head and transport and took them home to run the various test routines from JCM. The whole thing was quite dirty, so I started to clean it all up, including the transport belts. To get the belts in the transport to move around for cleaning, I unplugged the motor and ran power to it. It ran, but was noisy and ran slowly and drew quite a bit of current from my metered power supply. Pulled it out and sprayed a bit of cleaner/lube into it and it freed up a bit, enough to draw about half the current it was when installed in the transport. Put the whole mess back together and reinstalled it in the machine. It ran perfect, no problems!

Couldn't find just the motor, so we ordered a replacement transport. Runs real nice and quiet now. Took the old motor apart, tons of end play and worn bearings.

Moral of this story... The problem might seem to be electronic or software, but can simply be a mechanical failure due to use and age.
