Cabinet Fans WMS BB2
« on: January 23, 2024, 07:50:15 AM »
Looking for recommendations for quieter cabinet fans . I have two inside that sound like a noisy box fan on high that I want to replace.

Thanks!

You'd be risking burning out the video card, if you put fans in that have reduced CFM.
Chances are, the fans in your machine are over ten years old.
New brushless fans are ALWAYS quieter.
There's usually four fans in a BB2 you should replace.
I shop all over the place.

Probably just goofed up when he pressed POST and didn't realized that nothing was there! He was perhaps in the middle of de-soldering a 32 pin Eeprom.  :Tongue_Out:
There's not need to flag this type of error. It's not any infraction. I'm sure he will see this and reply.

Thank you for the info Stayouttadabunker! I recently replaced upper and main cabinet fans on my two BB2s. Much better airflow than the crusty ones that were in there.
I do have a question on the MPU fan though. The Digikey fan in the link only has two wires, my fans have three.
Can I use a two wire fan for this application without the "Tach" wire? Will it just run full blast all the time? Is that a problem?
The Gryphon GDA4010-12BB is no longer made. DigiKey has a number of 40x10 fans with similar specs that have three wires. Should I opt for these instead?
Thanks for the help.

Yes...but you may need to save your board connectors.
Get some splices to reconnect wires....really, you just need two.

Mine run full blast all the time...fans are cheap.
Look at all the metal heatsinks in there on glued, thermal-pasted, or fastened onto the top of the chips.
The companies making these video machines, they're trying to cool down stuff...heat kills.

I do have the MPU fan brand new. Same as original. I can spare a few. $10 plus shipping.

Thank you all for the tips. I had already purchased the 2 wire type from DigiKey.
I wasn’t sure if the 2 wire type would either run full blast all the time or NOT work at all.
Thanks to Stayouttadabunker’s experience and tips, I opted to install them and go full blast all the time!
I cleaned the dust off the heat sinks with a paint brush, soldered some connections to the board connector wires and installed the new ones.
Spinning and breezy!
Thanks all for the help. Where the heck would one find this type of info outside of NLG?!? No idea….
