Bally 831 Lamps.
« on: December 02, 2018, 01:50:09 PM »
Has anyone replaced the old GE #44 incandescent bulbs with LEDs? Any input would be appreciated.

The #47 is a direct replacement for the #44. You can find the #47 LCD bulbs on most pinball sights.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

Thanks, guys. I think I will go ahead with the conversion. I'll post some before and after photos when completed.

Picked up some yellows at the last pinball expo for 0.75 ea (IIRC).  I think the whites are too bright.  These sit behind the yellow dots on my Bally 847 top glass.  They seem fine?

Okay , after pulling the top glass I don't think I'll be able to convert my Model 831 to LEDs. I had a hard enough time trying to remove the original 44s. 😔  With MY fat fingers I'd never be able to install the LEDs.

trick to remove those bulbs in tight quarters - get those pencil erasers (old school) - that you put on pencils - they slide over the end of a pencil easily (available at Staples - office depot etc) - just press the open end over the bulb and squeeze as your turn/pull bulb out - use to replace as well.

Easy way to remove and replace light bulbs.
Use a piece of clear vinyl tubing, slightly smaller than the bulb diameter about 6 inches long.
Just push it on and twist. When the tube gets oversized on the end just cut it off.

IIRC 3/8" 1s the diameter you need?  A short piece on the end of a wood dowel also works well so it doesn't flex too much.

I was looking at the coin takers website for LEDs.  https://cointaker.com/   Looks like the premium non ghosting LEDs come in different versions.  One has a frosted lens, the other is clear, and the last is an open style with no lens.  My thought would be that no lens would be the brightest.
Anyone have any experience with that selection?
Thanks
Eric
