Won't boot. Red light flashing.
« on: March 20, 2016, 07:12:41 AM »
Hi
I have an S2000 I just picked up that won't boot and all lights are lit and the red light is flashing. I have removed all the chips and cleaned with an eraser. I unplugged the BVD and the printer, same. Unplugged all the ballast power in and still the same.
Any ideas of where to look from here?

Thanks
Bob

That's an enhanced board the varta battery(green) is dead.
Remove the green battery and the regulator at U16 it should then boot if you want it to work without the green battery you must also remove the regulator at U16.
Also check the coin battery on the mpu and replace if below 3v.

Sorry I should have posted that I already removed the battery and replaced the coin battery. I replaced the coin battery but I just checked the new battery and I' only getting 1.8 vdc. Time to run for a new battery.

Thanks

Could you post a clear picture of the battery area that you have posted. Hard to see but it looks like you may have a lot of acid damage to the area and you may have a bad mpu.

I found a new coin battery and installed it with no change. I agree about the damage on the board so I found an untested board and removed the battery and u-16. When I installed the board the game started to boot.( bvd cycled and the lcd on the door had netplex down but the red light was still flashing. I turned the machine off to make sure I had everything correct on the replacement board and when I reinstalled it I'm back to no lcd and no bvd cycle. I double checked all the connections and even swapped the power supply.

Attached are pictures of the old board and the replacement.

Did you remove U16 or just thise 2 small transistors off the old board? If you only removed the 2 transistors, take the other 3 off also. And try cleaning that old board better for residual acid

I did remove u-16 along with the other 3 transistors. I cleaned the board the best I can with a brass brush.
Tried both boards and same results. I have another board and mother board and enhanced board coming Tuesday.

You could try unplugging netplex devices to see if one has an issue and double check that all plugs and boards are plugged in well

Looks to me that the one board has major acid damage. I usually remove only the u-16. Not sure if removing the other 5 components along with the u-16 would be the thing to do. For future board cleaning its not advised to use a brass brush, you may do more damage. Use a tooth brush and vinegar. I think you will be good with another tested good board.

Thanks for the heads up on cleaning the boards. I did try unplugging the bvd and printer and had the same problem. The other board with the resistors removed was one I had laying around, I didn't remove them. Regardless both boards act the same so I'll see what happens when the new board comes.

Thanks for the help..

I just ran thru all the plugs on all the boards.(unplugged and re seated) no difference. Pulled the board and removed all the chips and reseated them again. Maybe this is normal but if I start with the board removed the bvd cycles and lcd comes up netplex error. With my limited experience that tells me its something to do with the board.

Not familiar with 539's but they sound like Reel Touch or Barcrest chips to me. Maybe someone can verify those chips are right to the game
