Greetings! New guy on the block with a Coupla questions
« on: August 16, 2016, 12:02:03 AM »
Greetings from So. Cal!
I just purchased my first machine and I have a few questions about it. I am learning so please bear with me. It is a Double Spin-Double Diamonds upright. I was a bit confused with this machine when I went to look at it. I was looking for an S2000 for the greater possibilities of future modifications. I have seen just this game in an S+ version and not in an S2K that I am aware of. The cabinet has a 6-digit serial and a date code of "10-97" which would be a non-S2000 unit, correct? First of all, it does not have the "batwing" speakers but it DOES have just the small non-enhanced ones on the side. Secondly, it DOES have the VFD display. Inside, it has the MPU box on the LH side of the cab. And it has a MARS bill acceptor that takes all old and new currency. The guy I bought it from got it from a dealer and the PO knows next to nothing about it other than it was set up for his home play.
So, this must be an S2K in an S+ cab, correct? It is a very nice machine that plays very well. I would like to, in the future, play around with different sounds and maybe add some backlit reels. Can anyone make a recommendation of what possible sound config said will work in this platform? Can I add the bat wings as-is or will it need something else as well?

Thanx again for the help!

Bud

That's an early S2000 and a vision cabinet I believe. I know positively it's an S2000. I would need to see a picture of the inside of the top box to know if it's a vision cabinet. If it is what I say, you can do backlit reels and enhanced sound, but it will require many parts and some rewiring to do so.

I thought something was weird with it. I don't have any pix of the top box but I can tell you that it has a small muffin fan and vent out the top if that is any help. Here are some pix I took before I moved it. It is still in the back of my truck!
Thanx again for the help.

If it's a vision cabinet you won't have a power plug for the backlight control board you would need to install backlit reels, though there is a way to tap power to have that. Besides that control board you would need backlit reels and the associated wire harness to do it. To have stereo, enhanced, sound, you would basically have to redo all audio wiring, add an amp in the top box, change to bat ear speakers, add a coin tray with bass speaker, add a multimedia daughter board to the MPU and get a sound simm for said multimedia board. You might be looking at the $200 neighborhood plus your time to get all that done

Thanx for that. I have been doing alot of reading and searching and it looks pretty easy. I am a tech wizard by nature and profession (Automation Specialist) so this is pretty much child's play. At least to me. Nothing in these machines look very intimidating nor challenging to say the least. I just have to acquire all of the necessary components and the proper sub-menu query's and I should be good to go.
I have learned quite a bit in the past few days.
This is a great forum with a wealth of knowledge and I hope to be able to contribute back to the group!

Thanx,
Bud

Are your speakers in top box? I see the small grills on each side. There should be a plastic channel that goes from the grill to the speakers on each side. My S2000 has them and it actually sounds decent.

Yes!
It has the small skinny speakers with a block-off plate on the sides adjacent to them where the bat wings would screw onto. It also does not have the coin tray nor any provision for the sub speaker down there.

Any S2000 coin tray or cover plate with the speaker installed can be used. You can even get a complete coin tray and just remove the front tray part if you choose to. Personally, I like a complete tray whether you use coins or not. To me, it just looks better and the tray funnels sound up to the player better. I converted sound from 2 speaker mono on a vision cabinet, which you have, to stereo with bat ear speakers for a friend of mine earlier this year. It made a world of difference and he loves the enhanced sounds from the 42 simm

That is exactly what I have in mind!
I am going to scrounge up the SIMM board with the 42 chip and all of the necessary components to convert this one. I am going to play around with the sounds once I get this in to see what I can do.
I still don't know why someone would gut a vision can to put reels in it. I guess that's all he had to work with.

Thanx!

I think IGT made a lot of the origional S2000 cabinets "vision ready" because they thought the platform would be very popular. Kinda like how they wire new cars and trucks for all the extras in case you buy them. Turned out backlit reels and better sound were more popular, lol. Don't know if that's the real reason, but it's my story and I'm stickin' with it

The early s2000's were all "vision ready" cabinets.  I actually really liked the vision games, but then the popularity of video slots came about and that top screen bonus wasn't as appealing so IGT put more effort on the i-games and moved on to the vision platform to the Reel Touch stuff.  The early igames were really bad, and it wasn't until wms made the video slots really popular that IGT came out with better efforts and the iGames+ platform to keep up.  They have never caught up in my opinion as I consider IGT video titles kind of lame other than maybe a handful.
