Trying to repair my 4 reel S2000
« on: September 20, 2016, 07:45:29 AM »
A while back, I had started a thread about getting my 4 reel S2000 up and running. This machine, (triple red hot 777's) is running the enhanced MPU board.

I had someone else look at this machine, but they weren't able to fix it.

I failed to mention something in the original post that is pretty important to consider when it comes to this machine and its' problems.

What I forgot to mention was that when I first fire up the machine, all of the back lit reel LEDs are locked on. They will stay locked on as long as the machine is powered up. The machine is currently down showing a coin in jam error, although the machine is not currently set up for coin-in, coin-out.

With the reel LEDs stuck on...where do I begin?

On a four reel machine with enhanced it is normal for the reels to lock up when power is applied.
Coin in jam things to check( coinless machines)
Make sure the coin bypass plug is secure and well seated.(located in the middle of the button deck where the coin comparator would normally plug in).
Check I/O cards both door and cabinet.
With the LEDs staying on all the time I would bet it is a bad cabinet I/O card causing all of your problems. Check for bent  or broken pins on the card also.

on my 4 reel machine with enhanced board and led back lit reels they flash for less than a second and then go out for boot up. try unplugging the reel back light driver from your cabinet io board mounted to the side of the mpu box. you are having a problem with one or more of your senet devices.

a list of senet devices to check.
door io card or cards some have 2.
cabinet io card.
credit display on the right side of the door with the door closed. not the vfd on the left the vfd is netplex.
backlight driver board mounted on the back wall.
bet per line display.

also you may have a bad mpu or motherboard. sometimes your reels will spin backwards if its the mpu that is bad but i have only seen this on 500 boards not on any enhanced.

If all the rest mentioned checks out ok. I would put my bet on a faulty Mpu.

Brief update...

This repair attempt will be different from the 1st time. This time, I have a fully working, identical machine that I can use to help trouble-shoot.

Yesterday, I installed the fully working MPU into the broken machine...same results.

Today, I plan on swapping out the I/O cards, etc.

On my 1st repair attempt, I replaced all of the I/O cards, the MPU, the motherboard....I haven't tried replacing any of the displays or the back lit controller board.

I just removed the 3 I/O cards from the broken game and installed them in the working one. The working machine is still running fine. I guess it's not the I/O cards.

Something worth noting from my 1st repair attempt...

I replaced the burnt female terminal on the connector that plugs into the I/O card on the inside of the door. This is the I/O card that's located towards the hopper, not the one located towards the button panel. The terminal that was burnt was pin #10...it's an orange wire.

I may have found the problem...or at least, part of it.

I'm giving the I/O connectors a good inspection, both visually, and I'm also tugging on each individual wire going to the connectors. On the I/O board inside the door, I found that this terminal has worked its' way out of the connector housing. It's a yellow wire with a red stripe.

I just noticed that the non-working machine is missing this ribbon cable.

I'm guessing that I need this cable....?

If so, does anyone have a spare they'd sell?

I think you don't need that unless you have tito.

You can always remove it from the working machine and see if there is difference. If you need the ribbon cable I have them cheap.

Ohio Gaming is correct, the ribbon cable is not needed unless you have TITO.

A loose wire on that connector may cause the problem depending on where it goes. Yellow wires i think are normally buttons i will check when i get to work.

update...

The machine is up and running now...no coin-in jams yet.

Everything works except the digital displays to the left of the reels and the multi-denomination lamp board isn't lighting.

Yep.....both connectors are connected.

I even swapped out the multi-denomination lamp board w/ a different one...still no lights.....even though I'm not certain either LED board was any good to begin with.

I'm thinking what you have is an addressing problem with your senet devices. One device is either bad and is "talking" for lack of a better word when it should not or you have more harness damage i just got to my shop I'm going to pull out one of my spare button panels and see what the wire that was loose goes to.

My guess is that they are either not connected right, or the I/O card that controls them is bad.
