Noisy Backlit Reels
« on: June 05, 2014, 07:23:12 PM »
I installed Backlit reels not to long ago and I've been noticing some soft grinding noise coming from the reels when they stop ...tonight installed Triple DD game......with the same noise at stop and a definite grind when they nudge.....I have read that loose reel strips will be amplified through the speakers....so made sure they were tight and secure .....would the noise be coming from the reel motors going bad ? I also checked if they were rubbing on the display ..nothing there...Any thoughts .......
Thanks
Eric

Remove the strips and play a few games without any strips to see if the noise persists.  If it doesn't, then your strips are still loose.  The noise doesn't go through the amplifier, what happens is that the strips act as amplifiers, providing a large surface that vibrates amplifying the vibration coming from the stepper motors.  Some motors vibrate more than others, and with loose strips, they will sound louder than others.  It is an ongoing issue, they happen in the casino's too, but since it is so loud there and spacious, it is hard to hear.  If the reels are too noisy, you might want to use a bit of tape and tape the strips to the sides of the basket as well, to reduce the vibration.

Roz  Bunker posted on the old site a youtube video of him using tie straps on reel baskets. ( I'm to lazy to look for it )

Rick  I'm going to disagree with some of what you said. It's true you can get a lot of noise from a loose reel strip when the reels are spinning but I don't think you would get that exact noise on a reel nudge, I guess what I'm trying to say is if the spin and nudge sound sounds the same then I would look for something else causing the problem.

Eric Let me tell you a true story, about 20 years ago I had this refrigerator that had the nosiest compressor motor that you ever heard, I don't think a airplane could have been any louder. So one day I went to Sears and bought a new frig, got it home and it made more noise than the one I already had, I call Sears and complaned about this damn thing, the Lady told be " but it has a energy saving motor " I told her I didn't want a energy saving motor  " I wanted silence"  they agreed to come pick up the new one. Sears was to come out the next day and pick it up and I put it out in my drive way. When I got home the next day from work it was dark but something just didn't look right. It turned out this brand new frig must have rolled down the drive way, fell over door side down. It was a mess with all the dents and one or two glass shelves broken. Next day they must have picked it up and I never heard anything from Sears. From that day on that old Frig didn't sound near as loud as I thought it was.

Reason for this story is, are you sure that a whole lot of your noise isn't coming from between you ears?? Lets do this, remove the top glass and disconnect all three speakers from the amp. Play a few games and see if the noise is still there or is it gone.

Is the sound coming from the speakers or the reels themselves? When using a multimedia board and sound simm on certain 500 series boards you can hear static in the speakers while the reels move. If the sound is coming from the reels it's not uncommon to have a noisy motor, but only hearing the noise when they stop or nudge would be unusual unless it's a programmed sound the machine is creating for effect although it could also be a minor motor issue. Unless you managed to lay your hands on new old stock reels none of the possibilities listed above would surprise me. And speaker static can be there even with brand new reels

Roz,
If i remember right (and I could be wrong also),but I think the zip tie trick was for the S+ reels or would probably work on the S2000 non-backlit reels.

Rick,I have made sure the strips are taped and are as tight as I could get them at the seam. The noise is worse when the reels nudge up or down..

Buzz, Thanks for the story ....pretty humorous I might add also......Last time I got my hearing checked it was pretty good lol.....Last night I did exactly what you mentioned ...unplugged the top speakers and its a definate grinding sound ......I will try and post a video tonight ...I have posted a few videos on the old site ...just need to remember how I did it ...
Thanks you guys for your replies .....I figured someone has come across this before

Cowboy,
The sound is coming from the reels themselves .....Verified that by unplugging the speakers....Thats why I was thinking it was the motors ..I just find it wierd that all would be going bad at once and not just 1 or 2 ....maybe not......I will try and do a video ....then you can see what Im talking about.
I know it would be hard to get new reels ...and probably cost a pretty penny as well...

Eric  I posted this on the old site.

Same problem,  noisy reels. different brand machine. I had a Williams Dotmation with terrible sounding reels. It's a long story but I ended up taking each and every reel motor apart, doing absolutely nothing to them, put them back together and no reel noise after I was done. That worked so good the second machine all I did was loosen all the screws that holds the motor together and tightened them back up and that fixed that one.  Now mind you I didn't do anything to repair the problem but the noise went away.  I kind of think all my machines are female  and every now and then they just want a little attention. Ignore them and they make a lot of noise !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strips are the problem ...not the motors the spaces between the supports on the baskets have a lot of play .....

Just bang up the volume a bit on your game.  You'd never notice that in a casino, and I don't think there's much that can be done to make them completely silent.  The humming sound that played through the speakers with the old 504a boards during spins...now THAT was annoying!  I couldn't have lived with that in a home environment.

Thanks,
Jason

I don't think turning up the volume is a fix ......as we all know anything over 1 is way  LOUD .....If I was in a casino I wouldn't give a hoot about noisy reels .....I would care more about how they were landing on the pay lines .......

Send Bunker a PM and ask how he tie wraped those reels. I remember there were pictures.

Read a few posts on the old site...I think the thing to do would be to get some spare baskets or maybe somehow bond some plastic posts in between the existing post on the baskets ....something to think about ...........

Sometimes the basket can get a little loose on the shaft try gently taping the little clip that holds the basket on the shaft just be carefull not to hit it to hard or the basket may hit the edge of the reel. Also you can try taking the basket off and use a little bit of electrical tape on the role pins that hold the basket in place.

I will try that also,....the problem seems to be with the basket being spread out between the posts as seen in the pic on reply #10...the strips are loose at these areas, and I believe that is where the strip vibration or noise is coming from...

Then you may want to check the strips them selves. Normally backlit reel strips are just a bit more narrow than non backlit, and won't even fit in a backlit reel without being trimmed. So the strips might be to wide if not trimmed, or some one could have made them to narrow. If you get new baskets I would get the non backlit type. Honestly though after watching the video, they don't seem all that loud to me, they will always make a little bit of noise.

Bunker was putting the zip ties at the base of the spokes close to the shaft. If it's going to make a difference you should know immediately. Anything close to the outer edge risks running into the lighting assembly
