S2000 MPU battery
« on: July 22, 2023, 02:36:08 AM »
Dear Forum!
I have an IGT S2000 Cleopatra 5 reels that I have a lot of fun with. The wonderful forum and its great members have often helped me with problems or missing spare parts. Now I want to address an issue that I have solved with all my pinball machines. Namely the MPU battery. The S2000 has a CR2032 MPU battery for which I have soldered in a battery holder. The exchange is therefore quite simple.
But: can't the CR2032 be replaced by a Goldcap or similar? Does this fail because of the charging voltage or what do I have to change on the board? Has anyone already done this?
I look forward to your experiences and ideas.
Many greetings
Christian

Batteries provide higher energy density for storage.
While capacitors have more rapid charge and discharge capabilities....not the same use here...esp. if you turn off your machine for any real length of time.
The only time the battery is being discharged really - is when the machine is off.

I've seen S2000's turned off for nearly two years.
Most recent event was during the Covid shutdown.
When I turned them back on, they hardly had any memory problems.
The best of the bunch were the IGT S+'s...not a single [Code 12].
Bally's, WMS BB2's, Aruze's and Konami's on the other hand...many of these models were nearly all dead or low.

I'm not going to say installing a Goldcap is bad or anything, I've personally never tried it and I don't reccomend it.
If anything, I'd might try installing a larger holder to throw in a larger sized battery with the same voltage?
If your S2000 is eating batteries, I'd be looking into some other failure for it?
Perhaps a resistor or diode along the line could be going out of specs because the battery power needed to retain the memory settings and accounting is so minimal, a CR2032 should be sufficient?
If you DO try using a Goldcap on an S2k, we'd love to hear the performance of this mod!

A CR2450 socket will solder right on the board. Same pin spacing as 2032, It should last about 8 years at the normal current draw of 5.3uA to 6.8uA.
Bunker is correct. I looked at supercaps as a replacement for the VARTA on 1270 boards. Not enough capacity and too much internal leakage. Not to mention charging problems without modifying the charging circuit. (Also there is no charging circuit for the coin cell!)
BTW...  1270's draw 20uA to 25uA from a CR2354. They should last about 3.5 years. This is with the machine always turned off. The coin cells still discharge a little with the power on.
Once a battery holder is installed, it's just not that hard to replace it once in a while.
I Repair IGT 50X, 1270, 039, 044, and S+ MPU's. Contact me at slots@lookelectronics.com for more information.

Thanks for your great explanations, Bunker and lookes. I was not aware of that. I will convert to CR 2450.
Btw: my S2000 does not consume too much batteries. I just wanted to avoid the occasional battery replacement as well. With lookes idea I can now extend this interval ;-)
Again, many, many thanks.
If anyone has successfully made a conversion to Goldcap, it would be great to post it here so others can replicate the mod.
